MHADA Gives Diwali Gift to 557 Families as N. M. Joshi Marg BDD Chawl Redevelopment Reaches Major Milestone
The long wait for 557 families of the N. M. Joshi Marg BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project in Mumbai is finally coming to an end. In a major step toward providing residents with better housing, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will distribute the keys to 557 newly constructed rehabilitation flats on Friday, November 6, 2026. The program will take place in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, bringing a special Diwali gift to hundreds of families.
The key distribution marks an important milestone in MHADA's efforts to provide safe, spacious and better living conditions to residents of Mumbai's old BDD chawls. After years of waiting in temporary accommodation, 557 families will finally move closer to their dream of owning a proper and permanent home.
MHADA Completes Three Rehabilitation Buildings at N. M. Joshi Marg
The redevelopment of the Worli, N. M. Joshi Marg and Naigaon BDD Chawls is being carried out through MHADA's Mumbai Board. The project aims to replace old chawl structures with modern residential buildings and provide eligible residents with improved housing facilities.
The rehabilitation work is progressing in different phases across these locations. As buildings are completed and receive the required Occupancy Certificates, MHADA is moving ahead with the process of handing over homes to eligible residents.
So far, approximately 1,400 rehabilitation homes have been handed over to residents at Worli, while another 1,400 homes have been handed over at Naigaon. The latest development at N. M. Joshi Marg is another significant achievement in this wider BDD Chawl redevelopment initiative.
557 Families to Receive Keys to Their New Homes on November 6
Three rehabilitation buildings constructed under the N. M. Joshi Marg project have now been completed, and the Mumbai Board has received the necessary Occupancy Certificates. This has cleared an important step toward handing over the 557 residential units to their rightful beneficiaries.
Residents had been waiting for the key distribution after the completion of the buildings and receipt of the required certificates. The upcoming ceremony will finally bring relief and happiness to families who supported the redevelopment process by vacating their old homes.
The key distribution program is scheduled to take place at 12 noon on November 6 at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre in Mumbai. The Chief Minister will hand over keys to selected beneficiaries in a representative manner in the presence of both Deputy Chief Ministers.
IAS Sanjeev Jaiswal Supports MHADA's Focus on Better Housing and Redevelopment
Under the leadership of IAS Sanjeev Jaiswal, Vice President and CEO of MHADA, the authority continues to focus on improving housing conditions, advancing redevelopment projects and delivering homes to eligible residents.
The N. M. Joshi Marg BDD Chawl project reflects the importance of coordinated planning, infrastructure development and timely rehabilitation in Mumbai's urban transformation. The completion of these three buildings and the upcoming distribution of 557 home keys represent meaningful progress toward fulfilling the housing commitments made to residents.
MHADA's redevelopment initiatives are aimed not only at replacing old structures but also at creating better residential environments where families can enjoy improved comfort, safety and quality of life.
Residents Welcome Their New Homes After Years of Waiting
For many families, the upcoming possession ceremony represents much more than receiving a set of keys. It marks the beginning of a new chapter after spending several years in temporary accommodation.
Sunil Dharpawar, a senior resident of N. M. Joshi Marg BDD Chawl, expressed happiness over the development. He said that residents had spent many years living in small homes and facing everyday difficulties. The opportunity to move into larger and more comfortable apartments is a moment of great satisfaction for families.
Another resident, Malini Dnyaneshwar Tejam, shared similar feelings. She said that although residents had spent much of their lives dealing with limited living space, their children would now have the opportunity to grow up in spacious and modern homes. For older residents, seeing the next generation enjoy better living conditions is a particularly rewarding experience.
Krishnakant Nalge, Chairman of the N. M. Joshi Marg BDD Redevelopment Committee, also welcomed the development. He said residents had been staying in transit accommodation for more than seven years while waiting for their permanent homes. He expressed happiness that the wait was finally nearing its end and requested that construction of the remaining buildings be accelerated so the entire redevelopment project could be completed as soon as possible.
BDD Chawl Redevelopment Brings New Hope to Mumbai Residents
The distribution of 557 home keys at N. M. Joshi Marg is an important step in Mumbai's ongoing housing transformation. The project highlights how redevelopment can help families move from aging and congested residential structures into modern homes with better living spaces.
For the 557 beneficiary families, this Diwali will bring a special reason to celebrate. Their long-awaited dream of having a permanent and spacious home is finally becoming a reality.
With continued progress at Worli, Naigaon and N. M. Joshi Marg, MHADA's BDD Chawl redevelopment initiative is moving forward with the larger goal of providing residents with dignified housing and a better quality of life. The upcoming key distribution is another positive milestone in this journey.
