BMC Andheri-Goregaon Cable-Stayed Bridge Cost Rises to 709 Crore

The cost of the proposed Andheri-Goregaon cable-stayed bridge has increased to ₹709.16 crore after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation approved additional funds to shift Tata Power’s 110-kV transmission lines and towers along the project route.

The BMC has approved ₹24.58 crore for relocating the power infrastructure, compared with the earlier provision of ₹10 crore. The revised proposal is scheduled to be placed before the BMC Standing Committee for approval.

The bridge is planned to connect Millat Nagar and Lokhandwala Complex in Andheri West with Bhagat Singh Nagar in Goregaon West. Once completed, the project is expected to provide an important alternative route for traffic moving between Andheri, Oshiwara and Goregaon.

Andheri-Goregaon Bridge to Provide Alternative Traffic Route

The proposed cable-stayed bridge will cross Goregaon Creek and create a direct north-south connection between western Mumbai’s key residential and commercial areas.

At present, commuters travelling between Andheri, Oshiwara, Lokhandwala and Goregaon rely heavily on S.V. Road, Link Road and the Lokhandwala Circle area. These routes often experience heavy traffic, particularly during peak hours.

The new bridge is expected to offer a smoother and more direct connection, helping reduce pressure on existing roads. Its planned integration with the northern extension of the Mumbai Coastal Road could further improve connectivity across western Mumbai.

Project Cost Revised After Power Infrastructure Relocation

The original approved cost of the bridge project was ₹694.50 crore, including taxes. However, the discovery of Tata Power’s 110-kV transmission infrastructure along the bridge alignment created a major technical requirement.

The BMC initially kept aside ₹10 crore for shifting the power infrastructure. After detailed assessments, the estimated requirement increased to ₹24.58 crore.

As a result, the overall project cost has now been revised to ₹709.16 crore.

Tata Power will carry out the specialised relocation work because the project involves shifting high-voltage transmission infrastructure. The BMC and Tata Power held several joint inspections and discussions to identify a suitable alternative location.

Tata Power Transmission Lines Clash with Bridge Alignment

The transmission towers and lines were found to interfere with the proposed bridge alignment. To resolve the issue, the BMC provided coordinates for an alternative location on November 20, 2025.

Tata Power subsequently submitted its relocation plan on December 31, 2025. After reviewing the proposal, the BMC recommended further action on January 27, 2026.

The additional expenditure has now been included in the revised project proposal, which will be presented to the BMC Standing Committee.

Construction Began After Land Availability Issues

The bridge project was awarded on December 1, 2022. However, construction could not begin as planned because the required land in the creek and mangrove areas was not immediately available.

During this period, the authorities continued with several preparatory activities. These included environmental clearances, land surveys, geotechnical investigations, structural designs and planning for the pile foundations.

Construction gained momentum after the required land on the southern side was handed over.

Work Progresses at the Bridge Site

Construction officially began on December 12, 2025. Work currently includes site levelling, marking and demarcation, piling activities and construction of a temporary access bridge.

These early construction activities are important for establishing the foundation and access required for the main bridge structure.

The relocation of Tata Power’s transmission infrastructure is now another key step required to keep the bridge construction moving forward.

Project Could Strengthen Western Mumbai Connectivity

The Andheri-Goregaon cable-stayed bridge is expected to become an important road link in western Mumbai once completed.

By creating an additional connection across Goregaon Creek, the project could provide commuters with an alternative to existing congested routes. It is also expected to support better movement between Andheri West, Lokhandwala, Oshiwara and Goregaon West.

Its future connection with the northern extension of the Mumbai Coastal Road could add further value to the project by linking the bridge with Mumbai’s expanding road network.

The proposed bridge has been designed to provide a wider and more efficient road connection between Andheri West and Goregaon West. Its key specifications include:

• Cable-stayed section: 238 metres
• Bridge width: 28.55 metres
• Number of lanes: 6 lanes, with 3 lanes in each direction
• Utility corridors: Provided on both sides of the bridge
• Key connections: Link Road, Bhagat Singh Nagar, Oshiwara and Goregaon

With six lanes and utility corridors on both sides, the bridge is planned to support both traffic movement and essential infrastructure requirements. The connection to Link Road, Bhagat Singh Nagar, Oshiwara and Goregaon is expected to improve access between several important areas of western Mumbai.

A Major Step Toward Better Traffic Movement

The increase in project cost reflects the additional work required to safely relocate existing high-voltage transmission infrastructure. While the change adds to the financial requirement, completing the relocation is important for the bridge to progress without further technical obstacles.

With construction now underway and the power infrastructure relocation being addressed, the Andheri-Goregaon cable-stayed bridge is expected to strengthen road connectivity in western Mumbai and provide commuters with another route between major parts of the city.
