23 Road Stretches Identified for Restoration

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to spend ₹6.59 crore to repair 23 road stretches across Goregaon and Malad following recent encroachment removal drives. The proposed work aims to restore damaged, uneven and pothole-affected roads, improve traffic movement and make the cleared areas safer for pedestrians and motorists.

The civic body has identified several stretches in the P/South ward covering Goregaon and the P/East ward covering parts of Malad for urgent repairs. The project is expected to improve road conditions on stretches affected by years of encroachments and unauthorized structures.

Road Repairs to Follow Encroachment Clearance

BMC teams have carried out multiple anti-encroachment operations in Goregaon and Malad in recent months. The drives were aimed at removing unauthorized structures, opening blocked road space and improving movement on busy streets.

In Malad, areas around Dindoshi and Kurar village have faced traffic problems linked to unauthorized construction and encroachments. Blocked road space has contributed to bottlenecks and made movement more difficult for local residents.

Goregaon has also seen similar issues, particularly in areas where roadside encroachments and unauthorized structures have affected traffic flow. Following the clearance work, several road sections now require surface repairs and other improvements.

The BMC has therefore proposed restoration work to address damaged patches and uneven surfaces created or exposed during the clearance operations.

Key Goregaon and Malad Roads Included

The 23 road stretches selected for repair cover several important locations in both suburbs. Some of the identified stretches include the area near Aarey Petrol Pump on S.V. Road in Goregaon West, Bandu Gore Road near Goregaon East railway station, and Nigos Road near the Indian Oil petrol pump.

Other Goregaon locations include I.B. Patel Road and Sarvodaya Nagar near the highway.

In Malad East, the proposed repair list includes the area around Kathiyawadi Chowk on Rani Sati Road and Sanskar College Road. The restoration work is expected to improve road surfaces and support smoother movement through these neighborhoods.

₹6.59 Crore Project Moves Forward

The estimated cost of the road repair project is ₹6.59 crore. M/s Rajaram Construction has emerged as the lowest bidder after quoting 38% below the BMC's estimated rates.

The proposal is being placed before the upcoming standing committee meeting for consideration. Once approved and awarded, the contractor will undertake repair and restoration work across the identified road stretches.

The lower bid could help the civic body complete the proposed work at a reduced cost compared with its initial estimates, subject to the required approvals and project conditions.

Focus on Better Roads and Public Spaces

The road repair plan comes after the BMC's efforts to reclaim public spaces through anti-encroachment operations. The civic body has also been promoting its "Pedestrian First" approach to improve access to public areas and create safer spaces for people walking through Mumbai's busy neighborhoods.

With cleared spaces requiring proper restoration, timely road repairs can help ensure that the benefits of encroachment removal continue beyond the demolition drives. Better-maintained roads can also support smoother traffic movement and improve daily travel for residents.

Vinod Gholap, chairperson of Fight for Right Foundation, welcomed the removal of encroachments and said the damaged roads should be restored quickly. He also called for quality construction and regular monitoring to ensure that reclaimed public spaces do not create new problems for pedestrians and motorists.

The proposed ₹6.59 crore project is expected to give several road stretches in Goregaon and Malad a much-needed upgrade while supporting the wider effort to improve traffic movement and public spaces across Mumbai.
