Borivali Railway Station Redevelopment Gains Major Upgrade

Western Railway Plans Modern Transport Hub to Handle Future Commuter Growth

Borivali Railway Station, one of the busiest stations on Mumbai's Western Railway network, is set for a major redevelopment as passenger traffic is expected to increase nearly four times over the next four decades. The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has prepared several master plan options to transform the station into a modern transport hub with improved passenger facilities, better connectivity, and commercial spaces.

The large-scale redevelopment is designed to meet the city's growing travel demand while making daily commuting safer, faster, and more convenient.

Peak-Hour Passenger Traffic Expected to Reach Nearly 1.41 Lakh

According to passenger projections prepared by Western Railway, Borivali station currently handles around 36,502 passengers during peak hours. By 2063, this number is expected to rise to approximately 1,40,940 passengers, reflecting rapid urban growth and increasing dependence on Mumbai's suburban rail network.

A separate pedestrian movement study also estimates that peak-hour footfall could reach nearly 94,774 people, highlighting the urgent need to expand the station's capacity and improve passenger circulation.

These projections have become the driving force behind the ambitious redevelopment proposal.

RLDA Prepares Multiple Redevelopment Plans

The Rail Land Development Authority has developed five to six master plan options, each offering different architectural layouts, construction costs, and commercial development opportunities. While the designs vary, every proposal focuses on improving commuter convenience and preparing the station for future demand.

The redevelopment plans include:

  • New station buildings on both the eastern and western sides
  • Elevated passenger concourses
  • Additional foot overbridges
  • Better links with existing skywalks and pedestrian subways
  • A dedicated pedestrian plaza
  • Multi-level parking facilities
  • Separate pick-up and drop-off zones
  • Improved passenger movement across platforms

The goal is to reduce congestion, improve safety, and create a smoother travel experience for millions of daily commuters.

Borivali Station Already Serves Hundreds of Trains Every Day

Borivali Railway Station is classified as an SG-1 category station under Western Railway's Mumbai Division and remains one of the busiest suburban stations in the city.

The station currently handles:

  • 191 train services daily
  • 185 trains that stop at the station
  • 3 originating trains
  • 3 terminating trains
  • 10 railway platforms
  • 6 foot overbridges connecting platforms

Platform lengths currently range from 305 meters to 615 meters, allowing the station to handle long-distance as well as suburban train operations.

With passenger numbers continuing to rise every year, railway officials believe the existing infrastructure will require major expansion to maintain efficient operations.

Additional Railway Infrastructure Projects Underway

Along with the station redevelopment, several supporting railway infrastructure projects are already in progress to improve passenger movement.

The planned upgrades include:

  • A new connection between the MCGM bridge and the southern foot overbridge
  • A deck slab on Platform 2 to reduce crowding
  • A 330-meter extension of Platform 3A being carried out by Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC)

These improvements are expected to increase platform capacity and make boarding and exiting trains more comfortable during rush hours.

Parking Capacity to Increase Beyond Future Requirements

Parking is another major focus of the redevelopment project.

Studies estimate that Borivali station will require approximately 744 Equivalent Car Spaces (ECS) in the future. However, the redevelopment proposal goes beyond that requirement by planning 974 ECS, giving commuters additional parking options.

The proposed parking facilities include:

  • 894 spaces in a multi-level car parking (MLCP) structure
  • Dedicated areas for passenger pick-up and drop-off
  • Better vehicle circulation around the station

The expanded parking infrastructure is expected to reduce traffic congestion around the station entrance while improving accessibility for commuters.

Commercial Development to Support Railway Revenue

The proposed eastern station building is expected to serve multiple purposes under the redevelopment plan.

According to the proposed layouts, the building will include:

  • Passenger service areas
  • Railway administrative offices
  • Parking floors
  • Commercial and retail spaces on upper levels

This mixed-use approach is designed to improve passenger amenities while also generating additional non-fare revenue for Indian Railways through commercial leasing.

Borivali Station Redevelopment to Support Mumbai's Growing Rail Network

Mumbai's suburban railway system continues to experience steady growth as the city's population expands. Railway planners believe Borivali's redevelopment will become an important part of strengthening the Western Railway corridor over the coming decades.

By combining upgraded passenger facilities, improved pedestrian movement, expanded parking, better connectivity, and commercial development, the project aims to create a future-ready railway station capable of handling significantly higher passenger volumes while delivering a smoother and more comfortable travel experience.

Once finalized and implemented, the Borivali Railway Station redevelopment is expected to become one of the most significant railway infrastructure upgrades on Mumbai's suburban network, supporting both commuter convenience and long-term urban transportation growth.
