Borivali to Get Two New Platforms for More Local Trains

New Platforms to Strengthen Borivali-Virar Rail Capacity

Western Railway has finalized plans to build two new platforms at Borivali station as part of a major effort to improve suburban train services between Borivali and Virar. The project is expected to create capacity for around 30 to 40 additional local train services while helping reduce congestion on the existing four-line corridor.

The new platforms are being developed under projects linked to the fifth and sixth railway lines. These additional tracks are designed to separate suburban trains from long-distance Mail and Express services, creating more room for local train operations.

Platform 3A to Handle Borivali-Virar Locals

One of the proposed platforms, Platform 3A, will be constructed at the northern end of the existing Platform 3. The platform will be about 330 meters long and seven meters wide.

Platform 3A will primarily support local trains that start or end their journey at Borivali and operate toward Virar. By providing a dedicated platform, these services can be handled more efficiently without interfering with mainline train movements.

The work is part of the Borivali-Virar fifth and sixth line project being carried out by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC).

New Platform 1A Planned for Harbour Line Extension

A second platform, Platform 1A, is planned on the southern side of Platform 1. It will also measure around 330 meters in length and seven meters in width.

The platform is connected to the Goregaon-Borivali Harbour Line extension project. Before construction begins, existing stabling lines at the location will need to be relocated to make space for the new facility.

Platform 10 to Get Major Extension

Western Railway is also planning a significant extension of Platform 10 at Borivali station. The platform is expected to be extended by about 85 meters toward the north and 110 meters toward the south.

The northern yard will be connected to the fifth and sixth lines, further improving the movement of trains through the station. A new ground-plus-four-storey station building is also planned between the proposed Platform 3A and the existing railway infrastructure.

Additional Platforms Planned at Andheri and Virar

The capacity expansion will extend beyond Borivali. Western Railway is also planning one additional platform each at Andheri and Virar stations. The proposed platforms will be developed on the eastern side of the respective stations.

Together, these improvements are aimed at supporting the growing demand for suburban rail services across Mumbai's northern suburbs.

Fifth and Sixth Lines to Improve Train Movement

At present, local trains and long-distance Mail and Express services operate on the existing four-line corridor between Borivali and Virar. This shared arrangement can create operational conflicts and limit the number of suburban services that can be operated.

The proposed fifth and sixth lines are expected to provide greater separation between suburban and long-distance train movements. This could help reduce conflicts involving Virar-Dahanu local services and create opportunities for more frequent suburban trains.

More Local Options for Northern Suburbs

The planned improvements could provide commuters with more direct local train options between Borivali and Virar. Passengers from northern suburban areas may also benefit from improved connectivity without having to travel toward Churchgate to access suitable services.

Western Railway said the new platforms are being planned with passenger convenience and future service expansion in mind.
