Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Clears 310 Illegal Structures; Magathane-Goregaon 120-Ft DP Road To Open By May-End

Fri Apr 10 2026

Mumbai: In a major breakthrough for infrastructure development in the western suburbs, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has cleared all 310 unauthorised structures in Kandivali, paving the way for the long-delayed Magathane–Goregaon 120-ft Development Plan (DP) road.

The civic body is now targeting to make the road operational by May-end, offering much-needed relief to commuters facing daily congestion.

Demolition Clears Long-Pending Bottleneck

The demolition drive at Singh Estate marks the resolution of a prolonged infrastructure hurdle that had stalled the project for years.

The proposed arterial road under DP 2034 was blocked by over 300 structures, including residential units and commercial establishments, delaying its execution due to legal, administrative, and political challenges.

With all encroachments now removed, authorities have begun preparations to:

  • Construct an asphalt road before monsoon
  • Undertake concretisation after the monsoon season

Rehabilitation Of Affected Families

Alongside the demolition, the BMC has initiated rehabilitation measures for eligible residents.

  • 197 families identified as project-affected persons (PAPs)
  • 187 families already allotted homes
  • Remaining 10 families to receive allotment soon

Rehabilitation housing has been provided across:

  • Poisar Village
  • Ashok Nagar
  • Lokhandwala Township

Additionally, 37 families have been accommodated at Vesta Building in Lokhandwala Complex based on eligibility criteria.

Legal And Administrative Challenges Resolved

The project had faced multiple hurdles over the years.

At one stage, a realignment proposal was suggested following a request by Prakash Surve and directives from the then Chief Minister. However, the matter escalated when residents approached the Bombay High Court through a public interest litigation.

In October 2024, the BMC chief rejected the realignment proposal, citing it as unfeasible, clearing the path for the original alignment to proceed.

Residents Welcome Long-Awaited Progress

Local residents and housing associations have welcomed the development, calling it a significant step toward easing traffic congestion.

Members of the Lokhandwala Residents’ Association (LRA) noted that the new road will:

  • Provide an alternative to the heavily congested Western Express Highway
  • Improve connectivity across northern and north-eastern suburbs
  • Complement upcoming infrastructure like the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel

Boost To Western Suburbs Connectivity

Once operational, the Magathane–Goregaon DP road is expected to:

  • Reduce travel time across key suburban corridors
  • Improve traffic distribution in Kandivali and Goregaon
  • Enhance overall urban mobility in Mumbai’s western belt

A Key Step In Urban Infrastructure Push

The project reflects Mumbai’s ongoing efforts to remove bottlenecks and fast-track critical infrastructure under long-term development plans.

With encroachments cleared and construction underway, the road is now close to becoming a reality—bringing long-awaited relief to thousands of daily commuters.
