Mumbai: In a major push to upgrade one of Maharashtra’s most important pilgrimage centres, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has approved a comprehensive ₹4,150.46 crore development plan for Pandharpur. The project aims to transform the temple town into a modern, well-planned spiritual destination while preserving its cultural and religious heritage.

Plan Approved At High-Level Committee Meeting
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Pandharpur Tirthkshetra Development Apex Committee held at Mantralaya.

Pandharpur holds immense religious importance, attracting lakhs of devotees—especially Warkaris—during major pilgrimage events such as:
- Ashadhi Wari

- Chaitri Wari
- Maghi Wari
These large gatherings often lead to congestion, highlighting the urgent need for planned urban development.

Key priorities include:
- Smooth crowd movement
- Improved road connectivity

- Construction of corridors for crowd management
- Conservation of ancient temples and maths
- Development of integrated facilities for Warkaris
- Creation of livelihood opportunities for affected locals
These measures aim to streamline pilgrim movement while protecting the town’s historical identity.
₹1,387 Crore For Roads, Ghats & Urban Upgrades
A significant portion—₹1,387.91 crore—will be used for broader urban development, including:
- Development of the Nagar Pradakshina route
- Beautification of river ghats
- Construction of parking facilities and commercial complexes
- Road and bridge upgrades
- Development of palkhi halting points
These upgrades are expected to ease congestion and improve accessibility across the town.
₹2,026 Crore Allocated For Land Acquisition
The largest component of the plan—₹2,026.75 crore—has been earmarked for:
- Land acquisition
- Rehabilitation of affected residents
- Compensation for properties and structures
The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure that compensation is fair and timely, and that no project is delayed due to funding issues.
Long-Term Vision For Pandharpur
The development plan is not just a short-term upgrade but part of a long-term vision to position Pandharpur as a world-class pilgrimage destination.
Authorities believe that once completed, the project will:
- Improve crowd management during peak pilgrimage seasons
- Enhance safety and comfort for devotees
- Boost local economy and tourism
- Preserve the town’s cultural and spiritual heritage
Conclusion
With a ₹4,150 crore investment and a clear execution timeline, the Maharashtra government is taking a major step toward transforming Pandharpur into a modern yet spiritually rooted pilgrimage hub.
