Tue Aug 18 2026
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis held a series of important meetings in New Delhi with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Bhupender Yadav to seek faster progress on major infrastructure, connectivity and development projects across the state.
The discussions focused on strengthening coordination between Maharashtra and the central government and removing delays affecting key projects. Highways, railways, metro networks, river-linking initiatives, the Uttan-Virar Corridor and pending environmental approvals were among the major issues discussed.
Fadnavis Seeks Faster Progress on Key Projects
During his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Fadnavis reviewed several ongoing and pending development projects in Maharashtra. He also briefed the Prime Minister on the state's administrative situation and projects being carried out with central government support.
The Chief Minister submitted a letter outlining areas where central assistance is needed to speed up projects at different stages of implementation. The discussions included major highway and railway projects, metro networks, river-linking initiatives and the Uttan-Virar Corridor.
Fadnavis also invited Prime Minister Modi to inaugurate the Pune Metro-3 project after its ongoing testing is completed. The project is nearing completion and is being developed in partnership with the Tata Group. According to the state government, Pune Metro-3 is the country's first metro project to be implemented under the new public-private partnership model.
Fadnavis described his meeting with the Prime Minister as positive and fruitful. He also noted that Maharashtra has received strong support from the central government for major development initiatives.
New Funding Options for Uttan-Virar Corridor
The proposed Uttan-Virar Corridor was a key topic during Fadnavis's meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
The Mumbai-Vadhavan Expressway connectivity project, also known as the Uttan-Virar Corridor, is estimated to cost around Rs 55,000 crore. Maharashtra has proposed seeking financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the ambitious project.
Considering the project's large funding requirement, Sitharaman suggested exploring support from another multilateral financial institution along with JICA. The approach could help Maharashtra mobilize the substantial funds needed to move the project forward.
The state government has welcomed the proposal and plans to coordinate with the relevant financial institutions. The additional funding option could provide greater financial flexibility and help advance the corridor project.
Maharashtra Seeks Faster Environmental Clearances
Fadnavis also met Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav to discuss environmental and forest clearances pending for several important projects in Maharashtra.
The Chief Minister presented details of proposals currently awaiting approvals at different stages and requested faster processing to prevent unnecessary delays in development work.
Yadav responded positively and assured that efforts would be made at the central level to speed up the concerned proposals.
Focus on Faster Infrastructure Development
The meetings in Delhi highlight Maharashtra's efforts to strengthen cooperation with the central government and accelerate major infrastructure projects. Faster approvals, stronger financial support and improved coordination could help several important initiatives move ahead more efficiently.
The discussions also reflect the state's broader focus on improving transportation, connectivity and infrastructure while supporting long-term economic and industrial development across Maharashtra.
