Mumbai's Biggest Green Space Project Moves Closer to Reality
Mumbai is preparing for one of its most ambitious urban greening projects as the plantation phase of the Coastal Road Gardens development is expected to begin after the monsoon season. The project aims to create a massive green corridor along the Mumbai Coastal Road by planting nearly 60,000 trees across 130 acres of reclaimed land.
Officials said that the first batch of 15,000 saplings has already arrived at the Worli section of the project site and is ready for planting once final approvals are received.
15,000 Saplings Ready for Plantation at Worli Stretch
According to senior officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the initial plantation work is likely to start in December. The project is currently awaiting final approval of the landscaping design and implementation timeline from the Municipal Commissioner.
The saplings have already been placed at the site and will continue to grow during the monsoon period. Once approval is granted, the plantation work will begin as part of a phased development strategy.
60,000 Trees to Be Planted Across 130 Acres
The Coastal Road Gardens project plans to introduce around 60,000 trees in multiple stages. The development will cover approximately 130 acres of reclaimed land created during the construction of the Mumbai Coastal Road South project.
Officials stated that preparations are already underway to ensure the land is suitable for large-scale plantation. Soil treatment and groundwork are currently being carried out before the area is formally handed over for landscaping activities.
Next Phase to Cover Amarsons and Priyadarshini Park Areas
Following the plantation work in the Worli section, the next phase of the project will focus on the Amarsons Garden and Priyadarshini Park stretches.
Around 8,500 additional trees are expected to be planted in these areas, further expanding the green cover along Mumbai’s western coastline.
The phased approach is designed to ensure proper growth, maintenance, and sustainability of the newly planted trees.
Reliance Foundation Leading the Landmark Green Initiative
The Coastal Road Gardens project was first announced by Reliance Foundation Chairperson Nita Ambani. The foundation is leading the landscaping and plantation efforts in collaboration with civic authorities.
During a recent Reliance Industries annual meeting, Ambani highlighted that a team of internationally recognized ecologists, environmental experts, and engineers is working on a comprehensive master plan for the gardens.
She described the project as a future ecological landmark that will support biodiversity while offering residents a world-class public green space.
New Green Lung for Mumbai
Once completed, the Coastal Road Gardens are expected to become one of Mumbai’s largest urban parks. The project aims to create a thriving ecosystem featuring thousands of trees, native plants, and habitats for birds and other wildlife.
Urban planners believe the development will significantly improve environmental sustainability while providing recreational spaces for residents and visitors.
The project is also expected to enhance the city's resilience against climate-related challenges by increasing green cover and supporting ecological balance.
Ground Preparation Work Already Underway
Before plantation activities can begin, the BMC is carrying out extensive ground preparation work. This includes leveling reclaimed land using sub-granular base material and murum filling ranging from 600 mm to 900 mm in height.
These engineering measures are intended to create stable and fertile conditions for long-term tree growth.
Officials say this groundwork is a crucial step in ensuring the success of the large-scale landscaping project.
Vision of a ‘Green Necklace’ Along Mumbai’s Coast
The Coastal Road Gardens project is being envisioned as a "Green Necklace" for Mumbai. Similar to the iconic "Queen’s Necklace" formed by Marine Drive, the new green corridor aims to become a signature landmark for the city.
The concept was previously unveiled during a public interaction hosted by the South Mumbai Residents Association, where civic officials shared draft plans and future timelines.
Authorities estimate that the gardens could be fully developed within the next few years, creating a unique combination of urban infrastructure and environmental conservation.
Conclusion
The Mumbai Coastal Road Gardens project represents a major step toward creating a greener and more sustainable future for the city. With 60,000 trees planned across 130 acres and the first 15,000 saplings already on-site, the initiative is steadily moving toward implementation.
Once completed, the project will not only beautify Mumbai’s coastline but also provide a valuable environmental asset, helping create cleaner air, richer biodiversity, and more open green spaces for future generations.
