Dharavi Redevelopment Project Advances With Railway Land Rehabilitation

Phased redevelopment with verification, and construction progressing together, Gains Momentum as 890 Tenements Vacated and 379 Structures Demolished

Mumbai’s ambitious Dharavi Redevelopment Project is moving ahead steadily, with major progress reported in Sector 6 of Meghwadi-Ganesh Nagar. Authorities have so far demolished 379 structures and facilitated the vacation of 890 tenements, marking an important step toward transforming the railway land into planned housing and infrastructure.

The redevelopment is being carried out in phases, with authorities focusing on both clearing the site and ensuring that eligible residents are moved through the rehabilitation process.

379 Structures Demolished, 890 Tenements Vacated

Sector 6 of Meghwadi-Ganesh Nagar is home to around 3,500 hutments located on railway land. As part of the ongoing redevelopment process, 379 structures have already been demolished, while 890 tenements have been vacated.

Some structures are currently awaiting electricity meter disconnection before demolition. Officials expect the remaining demolition work to progress in the coming weeks as the required procedures are completed.

The coordinated approach is helping authorities move the project forward while addressing the needs of residents affected by redevelopment.

Rehabilitation Process Shows Steady Progress

Alongside demolition, the rehabilitation process is also gaining pace. Officials said most residents who remain in the area have either signed rehabilitation agreements or are undergoing document verification.

This verification process is important to determine eligibility and ensure that residents who qualify for rehabilitation receive the benefits available under the project.

Eligible families are being guided through the process before shifting to alternate accommodation, allowing redevelopment and rehabilitation activities to move forward together.

Grievance Redressal Helps Address Residents’ Concerns

The project had earlier seen protests from some residents of the Ganesh Nagar-Meghwadi area. However, the grievance redressal process has encouraged many residents to come forward and present their concerns and claims.

Of nearly 125 residents who had initially opposed the eviction, around 80 have appeared before the Dharavi Redevelopment Project authorities for hearings.

Officials have continued to provide opportunities for residents to participate in the hearing and verification process. Eviction notices have now been issued to around 40 residents who, according to sources, did not appear for hearings despite receiving multiple opportunities.

The process is aimed at ensuring that concerns are addressed while the larger redevelopment plan continues to move ahead.

36-Storey Rehabilitation Building Under Construction

Another major development at the site is the ongoing construction of a 36-storey rehabilitation building.

According to sources, the first allotments in this building are expected to be made to railway employees, in line with the agreement between the project’s implementing agency and Indian Railways.

The construction of rehabilitation housing alongside the site-clearance process highlights the project’s phased approach. Instead of waiting for all demolition work to be completed, construction and rehabilitation activities are progressing simultaneously.

Dharavi Redevelopment Moves Ahead in Phases

The latest progress in Sector 6 reflects the broader effort to advance the Dharavi redevelopment on railway land through a structured and phased process.

With hundreds of structures already demolished and hundreds of tenements vacated, authorities are gradually preparing the land for the next stages of development. At the same time, verification, rehabilitation agreements, grievance hearings, and new housing construction are continuing.

Once railway employees are accommodated as planned, rehabilitation for other eligible beneficiaries will continue according to the project’s implementation framework.

The progress in Meghwadi-Ganesh Nagar represents an important step toward creating better-organized housing and infrastructure in one of Mumbai’s most significant redevelopment areas. As demolition, construction, and rehabilitation continue together, the project is steadily moving toward its larger goal of planned urban development and improved living conditions for eligible residents.
