Affordable Housing Initiative Aims to Give Sanitation Workers Modern, Sustainable Homes with Zero Power Bills
Nagpur has taken a major step toward improving the lives of sanitation workers with the launch of the 'Swapnapurti' Housing Project, a new affordable housing initiative under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) 2.0. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari jointly laid the foundation stone for the project on Sunday.
The housing development is designed to provide free permanent homes for sanitation workers while creating a modern residential community equipped with sustainable infrastructure and quality public amenities.
Free Homes Designed for Better Living
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the project is more than just a housing scheme. According to him, it represents a commitment to recognizing the contribution of sanitation workers by offering them high-quality homes and a better standard of living.
He said the colony is being developed with the vision of becoming a model residential community that people from across India—and even abroad—can look to as an example of inclusive urban development.
The project will include several modern facilities, such as:
- Well-maintained gardens and green spaces
- Community halls for social and cultural activities
- Solar power systems to reduce or eliminate electricity bills
- Advanced water conservation and sewage treatment facilities
- Sustainable infrastructure for long-term environmental benefits
Officials said the goal is to create a self-sufficient township where residents can enjoy comfortable living while lowering household utility expenses through renewable energy.
Solar Power and Water Recycling at the Core
One of the biggest highlights of the Swapnapurti project is its focus on sustainability.
According to Chief Minister Fadnavis, planners intend to maximize the use of solar energy so residents may eventually have little to no electricity expenses. The housing colony will also include water recycling and sewage treatment systems to improve water management and support environmentally friendly urban development.
These features align with India's broader push toward sustainable cities under various central and state government housing initiatives.
Nitin Gadkari Praises State Government's Decision
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari praised the Maharashtra government and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation for launching the project.
He said owning a home gives dignity and long-term security to sanitation workers who play a critical role in maintaining the cleanliness and public health of the city.
Gadkari also acknowledged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for quickly approving the proposal after it was presented to the state government.
He added that improving housing should go hand in hand with better education and employment opportunities so that future generations of sanitation workers can achieve greater social and economic progress.
Part of PMAY (Urban) 2.0 Housing Expansion
The Swapnapurti project has been launched under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) 2.0, the Central Government's affordable housing program that aims to help eligible urban families secure permanent homes.
PMAY (Urban) 2.0 expands the government's "Housing for All" mission by supporting states and urban local bodies in developing affordable housing projects for economically weaker and lower-income groups. Recent government announcements have placed strong emphasis on inclusive housing, improved urban infrastructure, and sustainable development across Indian cities.
The Nagpur project reflects these priorities by combining affordable housing with renewable energy, environmental planning, and community-focused facilities.
Senior Leaders Attend Foundation Ceremony
Several senior political leaders and government officials attended the foundation stone ceremony alongside Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
Among those present were Maharashtra Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Minister of State Adv. Ashish Jaiswal, Nagpur Mayor Neeta Thakre, Deputy Mayor Leela Hathibed, Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare, Maharashtra Safai Karamchari Commission Chairman Shersingh (Satish) Dagor, and other public representatives.
Their presence highlighted the government's focus on strengthening welfare initiatives for sanitation workers and expanding affordable housing in urban Maharashtra.
More Project Details Expected Soon
While construction has officially begun, authorities have not yet announced the total number of housing units, project cost, construction timeline, or expected completion date.
Additional details are expected to be released as the project moves into its next phase. Once completed, the Swapnapurti Housing Project is expected to become one of Nagpur's key affordable housing developments dedicated to improving the quality of life for sanitation workers while promoting sustainable urban living.
