Maharashtra CM Fadnavis Pushes AI-Based BMC Building Approvals With Goal of Faster, Transparent Redevelopment

AI Could Reduce Human Intervention in Building Proposal Processing

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has called for greater use of technology and artificial intelligence in Mumbai’s civic administration, with a long-term goal of processing building proposal files with little or even no human intervention.

Fadnavis made the remarks on Tuesday while inaugurating the online portal and logo of ‘Participate Mumbai’, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) new digital platform. The platform aims to connect citizens, businesses and organizations while supporting corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs and volunteer activities.

AI Portal May Speed Up Redevelopment Approvals

The Chief Minister welcomed the BMC’s move toward an artificial intelligence-powered system for redevelopment projects. He said AI could help make the approval process faster, more transparent and more efficient.

Fadnavis said he would like to see a system where building plans submitted to the administration can eventually be processed with zero human intervention. According to him, such technology could also support Mumbai’s ease of doing business by reducing unnecessary delays in the approval process.

An AI-supported system could help organize and review redevelopment proposals through a more streamlined digital process. It may also reduce manual delays and improve transparency in civic decision-making.

Maharashtra Government Expands Digital Citizen Services

Fadnavis also highlighted the need to make government services easier for citizens to access online. He said the administration has identified 47 schemes and services that are most frequently used by residents.

According to the Chief Minister, nearly 90% of citizens approach the administration for these key schemes and services. Improving their delivery through digital systems could make the process quicker and more convenient.

The government is also looking at business process re-engineering to improve how these services are delivered. By simplifying procedures and strengthening online systems, authorities aim to create a smoother experience for citizens.

Mumbai Moves Toward Smarter Civic Governance

The launch of Participate Mumbai and the proposed use of AI in redevelopment approvals highlight Mumbai’s growing focus on digital governance. Technology can help civic authorities manage applications more efficiently while giving citizens and businesses clearer access to public services.

The proposed AI-based building approval system could become an important step toward faster redevelopment, improved transparency and a more responsive civic administration in Mumbai.
