Fuel Prices Surge Again in Mumbai as Petrol Nears ₹109/Litre and Diesel Crosses ₹95 After Third Hike in 10 Days

Sat May 23 2026

Mumbai residents are facing another fuel price hike, with petrol rising to ₹108.49 per litre and diesel crossing ₹95 per litre. The increase marks the third revision in just 10 days, driven by rising global crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The higher fuel costs are expected to impact transportation, logistics, household expenses and inflation across the city, while authorities have assured adequate fuel supplies nationwide.

Mumbai residents faced another major fuel price shock on Saturday as petrol and diesel rates were increased once again, marking the third fuel hike within just 10 days. With global crude oil prices continuing to rise amid geopolitical tensions in West Asia, petrol prices in Mumbai are now nearing the ₹109-per-litre mark, while diesel prices have officially crossed ₹95 per litre.

The latest increase has intensified concerns over rising transportation costs, inflation and household expenses across Mumbai, especially for commuters, transport operators, delivery services and small businesses heavily dependent on fuel-based logistics.

Petrol and Diesel Prices Rise Sharply Again

According to the latest revision by state-run oil companies, petrol prices in Mumbai increased by 87 paise per litre, while diesel prices rose by 91 paise per litre.

Following the revision, petrol prices in Mumbai climbed from ₹107.62 to ₹108.49 per litre.

Diesel prices simultaneously increased from ₹94.11 to ₹95.02 per litre.

The latest hike comes only days after fuel prices were increased by around ₹3 per litre on May 16, followed by another nearly 90-paise increase on May 19.

Overall, petrol and diesel prices have surged by almost ₹5 per litre within a single week, significantly increasing pressure on consumers across the city.

Rising Fuel Costs Expected to Impact Mumbai’s Daily Economy

The repeated fuel price hikes are expected to directly affect Mumbai’s day-to-day economic activity.

Local transport operators, taxi drivers, app-based cab services, delivery companies and logistics-dependent businesses are likely to experience immediate operational cost increases.

Experts believe the rise in transportation expenses may also trigger fresh increases in prices of essential goods such as vegetables, milk, groceries and other daily-use commodities across Mumbai.

The growing fuel burden is particularly concerning for middle-class households already managing rising living costs and inflationary pressures in recent months.

Global Oil Tensions Driving Fuel Price Increase

The latest fuel price revisions are largely linked to rising international crude oil prices amid escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

Global markets remain concerned over possible disruptions in oil supply routes, especially around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important crude oil transit corridors.

Since India imports nearly 85 per cent of its crude oil requirements, domestic petrol and diesel prices remain highly sensitive to international crude price movements and global supply concerns.

Officials believe continued uncertainty in global oil markets could keep fuel prices elevated over the coming weeks if geopolitical tensions remain unresolved.

Petroleum Ministry Assures Stable Fuel Supply

Amid growing public concern over rising prices and increased demand, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued a statement assuring citizens that fuel supplies remain stable across the country.

The ministry stated that India currently has adequate petrol and diesel stock and there is no shortage in fuel availability.

Officials also appealed to citizens not to engage in panic buying and to purchase fuel only as per actual requirements.

Oil marketing companies are reportedly monitoring fuel distribution closely to ensure uninterrupted supply at retail fuel stations.

Fuel Prices Rise Across Major Metro Cities

Mumbai was not the only city affected by the latest revision.

In Delhi, petrol prices climbed to ₹99.51 per litre, while diesel reached ₹92.49 per litre.

Kolkata recorded petrol prices of ₹110.64 per litre and diesel prices of ₹97.02 per litre.

Meanwhile, Chennai saw petrol prices rise to ₹105.31 per litre.

The widespread increase across major cities reflects the broader impact of global crude oil market volatility on domestic fuel pricing.

Inflation Concerns Deepen Across Mumbai

The repeated increase in petrol and diesel prices is expected to further intensify inflationary pressure in Mumbai’s urban economy.

Over the past few weeks, the city has already witnessed rising prices of transportation, food items and household essentials.

With logistics and transportation costs now climbing again, businesses may increasingly pass on additional expenses to consumers.

Economists believe sustained fuel price increases often create a ripple effect across multiple sectors, including retail, agriculture, public transport and supply-chain operations.

Mumbaikars Brace for Higher Living Costs

As petrol edges closer to ₹109 per litre and diesel crosses ₹95, Mumbaikars are now preparing for the possibility of higher daily expenses in the coming weeks.

The latest price revision has once again highlighted how strongly global oil market developments influence India’s domestic economy and urban household budgets.

With uncertainty continuing in international crude markets, all eyes now remain on future fuel price revisions and whether global tensions ease enough to stabilise oil prices in the near future.
