Ganesh Visarjan 2026: Mumbai Immerses Over 61,500 Idols

BMC Reports Peaceful Immersion Process

Mumbai witnessed the first major Ganesh visarjan of the 2026 Ganeshotsav season as more than 61,500 idols were immersed across the city following the one-and-a-half-day celebrations. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) figures, a total of 61,528 Ganesh and Hartalika idols had been immersed by 4 am on Wednesday, September 16.

The immersion processions took place at designated locations across Mumbai as devotees gathered to bid farewell to Lord Ganesha with chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya.” The civic body reported that no untoward incident was recorded during the period covered by the latest figures.

More Than 61,000 Household Ganesh Idols Immersed

Household celebrations made up the largest share of the immersions. BMC data showed that 61,135 household Ganesh idols were immersed during the one-and-a-half-day period.

In addition, 301 idols from public Ganesh mandals were immersed across the city. The figures also included 92 Hartalika idols, bringing the total number of immersions to 61,528 by 4 am.

The large number of household immersions reflected the strong participation of families across Mumbai during the opening phase of the annual Ganesh festival.

BMC Provides Designated Immersion Points and Artificial Ponds

To manage the large number of devotees and processions, the BMC arranged designated immersion locations at different parts of Mumbai. Artificial ponds were also made available at several locations to provide additional facilities for devotees.

These arrangements were aimed at helping families complete the visarjan process smoothly while managing crowds at major immersion points. Civic teams continued to monitor the locations as devotees arrived with their idols.

The peaceful completion of the first major immersion period also allowed devotees to take part in the traditional farewell ceremonies in an organized manner.

Ganesh Visarjan Takes Place on Different Days

Ganeshotsav traditions vary between families and communities, so devotees do not all immerse their idols on the same day. While many households choose the one-and-a-half-day visarjan, others observe immersion on the fifth, seventh or final day of the festival.

The one-and-a-half-day immersion is considered the first major visarjan period in Mumbai. More immersion processions will take place as the festival continues, with devotees following their respective family and community traditions.

Mumbai Prepares for More Ganesh Visarjan Processions

The BMC's immersion arrangements will continue in the coming days as more households and public mandals prepare for visarjan. Designated immersion points and artificial ponds are expected to remain important facilities for managing the growing number of devotees and idols.

Mumbai's 12-day Ganeshotsav celebrations will reach their final stage on Anant Chaturdashi on September 25. The concluding day is expected to bring another large wave of immersion processions across the city, with participation from both household devotees and public Ganesh mandals.
