Mumbai is set to open Maharashtra’s first dedicated mangrove park at Gorai in Borivali, named Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Mangrove Park. Spread across nearly eight hectares, the eco-tourism project features a 750-metre elevated mangrove boardwalk, an 18-metre birdwatching tower, a nature interpretation centre, café and educational facilities. The park aims to promote mangrove conservation, environmental awareness and sustainable tourism while offering residents a unique nature-based recreational destination.
Mumbai is set to get a major eco-tourism and environmental attraction as Maharashtra’s first dedicated mangrove park at Gorai in Borivali is finally scheduled to open to the public on May 28. Named Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Mangrove Park, the long-awaited project is being viewed as a major step towards promoting mangrove conservation, nature tourism and environmental awareness within Mumbai.
The opening of the mangrove park comes at a time when Mumbai is increasingly focusing on balancing large-scale infrastructure growth with ecological preservation. Spread across nearly eight hectares, the project is expected to become one of Mumbai’s most unique urban nature destinations, offering residents a rare opportunity to experience the city’s coastal ecosystem up close.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to Inaugurate the Mangrove Park
According to BJP MLA Sanjay Upadhyay, the inauguration ceremony of the Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Mangrove Park will take place at 10 am on May 28 in Gorai, Borivali.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Piyush Goyal are expected to officially inaugurate the park. State Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar, Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha and former MP Gopal Shetty will also remain present during the ceremony.
The project was originally launched in 2021 during the Maha Vikas Aghadi government when Aaditya Thackeray was serving as Environment and Tourism Minister.
Although the park was reportedly completed nearly a year ago, multiple inauguration postponements delayed its public opening until now.
Mumbai’s First Dedicated Mangrove Eco-Tourism Park
The Gorai project is being seen as Mumbai’s first dedicated mangrove eco-tourism park designed specifically to promote awareness about mangrove ecosystems and coastal biodiversity.
One of the biggest highlights of the park is a 750-metre elevated boardwalk built through the mangrove ecosystem. Officials have stated that the boardwalk was constructed without cutting a single mangrove tree, making it one of the project’s key environmental features.
The elevated pathway allows visitors to move through the mangrove zone and eventually reach a creek-side viewing deck designed for nature observation and eco-tourism experiences.
Birdwatching Tower, Nature Centre and Café Included
Apart from the mangrove trail, the park also includes multiple recreational and educational facilities aimed at making the site a long-term environmental tourism destination.
The project features an 18-metre-high birdwatching tower offering panoramic views of the mangrove ecosystem and surrounding coastal region.
A two-storey Nature Interpretation Centre has also been developed within the park. According to officials, the centre includes a library, workshop spaces, café facilities, rooftop restaurant and gift shop.
The infrastructure is designed to create a combination of environmental education, eco-tourism and public recreation within the mangrove zone.
Park Expected to Boost Environmental Awareness in Mumbai
The opening of the mangrove park is expected to significantly strengthen public awareness regarding coastal ecosystems and mangrove conservation in Mumbai.
Mangroves play a crucial role in protecting Mumbai’s coastline by reducing coastal erosion, supporting biodiversity, acting as natural flood barriers and helping maintain ecological balance.
Officials believe the park can help create stronger public engagement around environmental protection while also offering residents a nature-focused recreational space within the city.
Gorai Emerging as a Major Eco-Tourism Destination
With the launch of Maharashtra’s first mangrove park, Gorai is expected to further strengthen its position as one of Mumbai’s key eco-tourism destinations.
The region already attracts visitors because of its beaches, coastal landscape and tourism infrastructure. The addition of a large-scale mangrove park is likely to increase footfall among nature enthusiasts, students, environmental groups and tourists.
The project is also being viewed as an important example of integrating environmental conservation with urban public infrastructure.
Mumbai Gets a New Nature Landmark
The inauguration of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Mangrove Park marks an important addition to Mumbai’s environmental and tourism landscape.
At a time when the city is witnessing rapid urban development and major infrastructure expansion, the creation of a dedicated mangrove conservation park reflects growing efforts to preserve ecological spaces alongside urban growth.
With its elevated mangrove walkway, birdwatching tower, nature centre and eco-tourism facilities, the Gorai mangrove park is expected to emerge as one of Mumbai’s most distinctive public environmental attractions in the coming years.
