Indian Railways Plans Doorstep Parcel Pickup and Delivery in 8 Cities, Including Mumbai
Indian Railways is preparing to make parcel services more convenient by introducing a doorstep pickup and delivery facility in eight major Indian cities, including Mumbai. The proposed initiative will allow individuals and businesses to send parcels directly from their homes or offices without visiting railway stations.
Under the planned system, customers will be able to book shipments online, make digital payments, select logistics service providers and track their parcels through a dedicated mobile application and website. The initiative aims to combine the extensive railway transportation network with private logistics companies to provide a complete door-to-door delivery solution.
The service is planned for Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Pune. The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) is developing the digital platform to support online bookings and parcel tracking.
The service is not operational yet. It will be introduced after the application and website are developed and the required testing is completed. The official launch date will be communicated to the concerned railway departments.
How Will Indian Railways' Doorstep Parcel Delivery Service Work?
The proposed service will follow a three-stage transportation model involving private logistics companies and Indian Railways.
In the first stage, a private logistics partner will collect the parcel from the sender's home or business address and transport it to the designated railway parcel office. Indian Railways will then carry the shipment to the destination railway station.
Once the parcel reaches its destination, another logistics partner or the designated service provider will collect it and deliver it directly to the recipient's address.
Customers will be able to choose their preferred logistics provider through the official application or website. The platform will also offer digital payment facilities and real-time parcel status updates.
Additional services, including packaging and temporary storage, may also be available at extra charges.
8 Cities to Get Doorstep Railway Parcel Services
The proposed doorstep parcel facility will initially cover eight major cities across the country:
- Delhi
- Mumbai
- Kolkata
- Chennai
- Ahmedabad
- Hyderabad
- Bengaluru
- Pune
For Mumbai residents and businesses, the initiative could offer a convenient alternative to traditional railway parcel booking. Customers will be able to send goods without making separate trips to railway parcel offices.
The service is also expected to help businesses that regularly transport products across cities by combining railway connectivity with private delivery networks.
Railway Parcel Bookings Can Be Made 15 Days in Advance
According to the proposed operating guidelines, customers will be able to book parcel transportation up to 15 days before the scheduled departure of a train. The booking window will close one day before the train's departure.
The logistics partner collecting the shipment must deliver it to the designated railway parcel office at least one hour before departure. However, the parcel must not be handed over more than 12 hours before the scheduled departure.
This arrangement is intended to provide sufficient time for parcel handling and transportation while maintaining railway operating schedules.
Parcel Charges Will Depend on Weight, Size and Distance
The total cost of sending a parcel will depend on several factors, including its weight, dimensions, train category and transportation distance.
Customers will be able to see railway freight charges and private logistics service fees separately. This will help them understand the cost of railway transportation as well as doorstep pickup and final delivery.
The digital booking system is expected to make the payment process simpler by allowing customers to complete transactions online.
Indian Railways Announces Proposed Cancellation and Refund Rules
The proposed guidelines also explain how cancellations and refunds will work.
Customers who cancel their bookings before the parcel is picked up will receive a refund of the railway freight charge after a deduction of Rs 10 as a clerical fee.
However, refunds for doorstep pickup and delivery charges will depend on the cancellation policy of the selected private logistics provider.
Once a parcel has been collected from the sender, the booking cannot be cancelled.
Packaging and Parcel Safety Rules for Customers
Customers will be responsible for ensuring that their parcels are properly packed and that the declared contents are accurate.
Indian Railways will not accept prohibited materials, including explosives, inflammable substances and illegal items. All shipments must follow the applicable railway transportation and safety regulations.
Responsibility for loss or damage during railway transportation will be determined under existing railway rules. Meanwhile, complaints related to doorstep pickup and final delivery will be handled by the respective private logistics company.
New Initiative Aims to Make Railway Parcel Services More Convenient
The proposed doorstep parcel service represents an effort by Indian Railways to improve the customer experience through digital booking and coordinated logistics support.
By bringing private delivery companies into the railway parcel network, the initiative aims to reduce the need for customers to visit railway stations while making long-distance parcel transportation more accessible.
For people and businesses in Mumbai and the other seven selected cities, the service could provide a more convenient way to send and receive goods once it becomes operational.
