Kalyan-Dombivli: MMRDA Moves Ahead With ₹110-Crore Six-Lane Bridge Between Ambivli and Shahad

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken the first step toward a new six-lane bridge between Ambivli and Shahad in the Kalyan-Dombivli region. The proposed bridge, estimated to cost ₹110 crore, will cross the Ulhas River alongside the existing British-era bridge.

MMRDA has asked the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) outlining the project's design, land requirements, road dimensions, and other technical details. The initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity for residents and commuters.

New Bridge Proposed to Reduce Traffic Congestion

The proposed bridge comes in response to growing traffic pressure between Ambivli and Shahad. The existing narrow bridge is struggling to handle the rising number of vehicles as residential and industrial development continues across the region.

Daily traffic congestion causes delays for commuters and can also affect the movement of emergency vehicles, including ambulances, fire engines, and police vehicles. The new six-lane bridge is expected to provide additional road capacity and support smoother traffic movement once it is completed.

Growing Development Increases Demand for Better Connectivity

KDMC Mayor Harshali Chaudhary recently raised the bridge proposal during a meeting with Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, requesting MMRDA funding for the project.

Chaudhary highlighted the growing need for better road infrastructure as development expands across several areas in KDMC's A ward. These include Vadavli, Atali, Ambivli, Mohane, Titwala, Mohili, and Galegaon.

The proposed bridge and its approach roads are expected to improve access between these developing neighborhoods and Kalyan city, making daily travel more convenient for residents.

The mayor said Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had taken the demand seriously and directed officials to move the proposal forward. Kalyan MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde has also assured support in securing the required funds.

KDMC Begins Preparing the Detailed Project Report

As part of the next steps, MMRDA has written to the KDMC city engineer requesting the information needed to prepare the DPR. The report will cover important project details, including land requirements, road dimensions, the proposed layout, and other technical aspects.

KDMC City Engineer Shailesh Kulkarni confirmed that the civic body had received MMRDA's communication and started work on the report.

He said the DPR was under preparation and that the parallel six-lane bridge would move forward after the required approvals were granted.

Construction Depends on Approvals and Clearances

The proposed ₹110-crore bridge is still in the planning stage. After the DPR is submitted, the project will need the necessary technical clearances and administrative approval before the tendering process can begin.

Once implemented, the new bridge could strengthen road connectivity between Ambivli, Shahad, and nearby developing areas. It is also expected to support the region's growing residential and industrial activity by improving access to Kalyan city.

The project marks an important step toward addressing traffic challenges in the Kalyan-Dombivli region, although the construction timeline will depend on the completion of the report and the required approvals.
