Kalyan-Murbad Railway Project Moves Ahead After 10 Years
Sat Jul 04 2026
151 Hectares Across 18 Villages to Be Acquired in First Phase; New Rail Link Expected to Improve Regional Connectivity and Economic Growth
After spending nearly a decade in the planning stage, the much-awaited Kalyan - Murbad railway project has entered a major implementation phase. The Maharashtra government has officially started the land acquisition process for the proposed 28-kilometer railway corridor, bringing the long-delayed infrastructure project closer to becoming a reality.
The first phase of land acquisition covers 151.44 hectares spread across 18 villages in Kalyan and Murbad talukas. Officials have also opened a 30-day period for affected landowners to submit objections, suggestions, or claims before the acquisition process moves ahead.
The railway project, supported by both the Central and Maharashtra governments, is expected to significantly improve transportation, reduce travel time, and strengthen economic development across the region.
Land Acquisition Begins for the First Phase of the Railway Corridor
The Maharashtra government has issued an official notification to begin acquiring land required for the new railway line. In this initial phase, authorities will acquire 151.44 hectares, while the complete project is expected to require approximately 214 hectares.
As per the notification, affected landowners have 30 days to present objections or claims before the designated authority. Compensation for acquired land will be finalized only after all legal procedures, including hearings and statutory approvals, are completed.
This marks one of the most significant milestones for the railway project since it was first proposed nearly ten years ago.
New Railway Line Will Give Murbad Its First Direct Rail Connection
The proposed 28-kilometer railway line will connect Kalyan to Murbad through Ambivli and Titwala, providing Murbad taluka with its first-ever direct railway connection.
The project was originally announced in 2016 by former Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and later approved as a joint venture between the Central Government and the Maharashtra Government. Over the years, the project received administrative approvals, technical clearances, and funding commitments.
More recently, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed budgetary support for the railway line, allowing the project to move into the land acquisition stage.
Infrastructure experts have noted that the Kalyan - Murbad corridor forms part of broader efforts to improve suburban rail connectivity beyond the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, where expanding transport infrastructure has become a priority amid rapid population growth.
18 Villages Included in the Initial Acquisition Plan
According to government records, the first phase includes land from 18 villages across both talukas.
Kalyan Taluka
Around 71.86 hectares will be acquired from ten villages:
- Mohane
- Atali
- Ambivli
- Balyani
- Mohili
- Revati
- Navgaon
- Kolimb
- Kelani
- Mamnoli
Murbad Taluka
Approximately 79.57 hectares will be acquired from eight locations:
- Potgaon
- Ghorale
- Nandani
- Pashani
- Devpe
- Shastrinagar
- Malinagar
- Murbad town
Officials stated that all objections submitted during the notification period will be reviewed before further acquisition proceedings begin.
Project Expected to Reduce Travel Time and Improve Daily Commutes
Residents of Murbad currently rely on railway stations such as Kalyan, Shahad, Badlapur, and Titwala to access Mumbai's suburban rail network. This often results in longer road journeys before reaching a railway station.
Once completed, the new railway corridor is expected to offer a direct and faster travel option for thousands of daily commuters, including students, office workers, farmers, and business owners.
The improved rail connection is also expected to reduce transportation costs while making travel more convenient for people commuting to Mumbai and nearby industrial areas.
Better Connectivity Could Boost Investment and Local Development
Beyond easing passenger travel, the Kalyan - Murbad railway project is expected to create new opportunities for regional development.
Improved rail connectivity could attract industrial investment, support residential development, strengthen local businesses, and improve the movement of agricultural products. Tourism in the Murbad region may also benefit as travel becomes easier for visitors.
Urban planning experts have frequently highlighted that improved rail infrastructure encourages balanced regional growth by expanding access to employment, education, healthcare, and commercial centers outside major cities.
A Decade-Old Railway Project Finally Enters the Execution Stage
The launch of the land acquisition process represents one of the biggest breakthroughs for the Kalyan - Murbad railway project since it was first announced in 2016. While several legal and construction stages remain before trains begin operating, the project has now moved beyond planning into active implementation.
With support from both the Central and Maharashtra governments, the railway corridor is expected to become an important transport link that improves mobility while supporting long-term economic growth across Kalyan, Murbad, and surrounding areas.
