Residents to Have a Key Role in Redevelopment Planning
The Kamathipura cluster redevelopment project is set to move forward with active participation from residents, tenants, and landowners. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has emphasized that feedback from the local community will be considered while shaping the redevelopment plan for the historic Mumbai neighborhood.
During a presentation and public interaction program at Akhil Padmashali Samaj Hall, MHADA Vice President and CEO Sanjeev Jaiswal said the redevelopment process would follow the principles of citizen participation, transparency, and open dialogue.
34-Acre Project Covers More Than 700 Buildings
The proposed Kamathipura redevelopment covers approximately 34 acres and includes around 475 cessed buildings and 259 non-cessed buildings. More than 8,000 residents and tenants are connected with the project, including about 6,625 residential tenants and 1,376 commercial tenants.
The project also involves nearly 800 landowners and proposes the development of around 4,500 additional residential units. The large-scale plan is aimed at improving the area's housing conditions while supporting the needs of existing residents and businesses.
MHADA Focuses on Transparency and Community Dialogue
MHADA is the nodal agency and Special Planning Authority responsible for implementing the project. The redevelopment is being carried out under Regulation 33(9) of DCPR 2034.
The authority has said that discussions with residents and other stakeholders will remain an important part of the process. Their suggestions and concerns are expected to help guide decisions related to rehabilitation and redevelopment.
Resident Demands Receive MHADA Approval
MHADA has also approved several demands raised by residents and occupants as part of the redevelopment process. These include two years of advance rent, followed by cheques for the following year.
Residents will also receive a shifting allowance of Rs 25,000. In addition, the monthly rent provided to non-residential occupants has been enhanced.
The measures are intended to provide greater financial support to affected occupants during the transition period and make the redevelopment process more convenient for the local community.
