Maharashtra Announces Flood Relief for Palghar Families

State Government Approves Financial Assistance to Help Residents Rebuild Homes, Businesses and Livelihoods

The Maharashtra Government has announced a special financial relief package for families affected by the severe flooding caused by the record-breaking rainfall in Palghar district and the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation area during July. The initiative aims to provide timely financial support to thousands of residents who suffered losses to their homes, businesses, livestock, and livelihoods.

The Relief and Rehabilitation Department issued the Government Resolution (GR) on August 3, 2026, confirming a comprehensive assistance package for flood-affected citizens following one of the region's most intense rainfall events in recent years.

Special Relief Approved After Record July Rainfall

The decision comes after exceptionally heavy rainfall between July 4 and July 8, 2026, triggered widespread flooding across Palghar and Vasai-Virar. Several residential areas, commercial establishments, agricultural assets, livestock, and public infrastructure were severely affected due to waterlogging caused by rainfall similar to a cloudburst.

Following the disaster, Vasai-Virar Mayor Ajiv Patil spent four consecutive days visiting affected localities, reviewing the ground situation, and coordinating emergency relief operations. He later submitted a formal request to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis seeking a special financial assistance package for the affected residents.

The proposal was approved during a state-level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister on July 28, 2026, and the official Government Resolution has now been issued, paving the way for relief distribution.

Financial Assistance for Flood-Affected Families

Under the newly approved package, families displaced or affected by the floods will receive financial support for essential household losses.

Each eligible family will receive:

• ₹10,000 for the loss of clothing.
• ₹10,000 for damaged household utensils and essential items.

This brings the total immediate household assistance to ₹20,000 per family.

The government has also relaxed the earlier eligibility rule that required homes to remain submerged for more than 48 hours. This change is expected to make a larger number of affected families eligible for financial assistance.

Higher Compensation for Damaged Homes

The relief package also provides enhanced compensation based on the extent of damage to residential properties.

The approved assistance includes:

• ₹1.5 lakh for completely destroyed pucca and kutcha houses.
• ₹50,000 for houses with approximately 50% structural damage.
• ₹25,000 for houses with around 25% damage.
• ₹15,000 for houses with about 15% damage.
• ₹15,000 for eligible huts located in officially recognized urban slum areas.

The government stated that these measures are intended to help families begin rebuilding their homes as quickly as possible.

Relief for Shopkeepers, Small Businesses and Traditional Artisans

Recognizing the impact on local businesses, the state has also introduced financial support for shopkeepers, small traders, stall owners, and traditional artisans affected by the floods.

Eligible registered shopkeepers, stall owners, ration card holders, and individuals whose names appear on the electoral rolls will receive 75% of their officially assessed losses, based on government damage assessment reports.

The maximum assistance includes:

• Up to ₹50,000 for shop owners.
• Up to ₹10,000 for stall owners.

Traditional artisans, including handloom workers, potters, and members of the Bara Balutedar community, will also receive compensation covering 75% of their assessed losses, subject to a maximum limit of ₹50,000.

Support for Farmers, Livestock Owners and Fishermen

The special package extends financial assistance to farmers, livestock owners, and fishermen who experienced losses during the floods.

For livestock owners, compensation has been approved as follows:

• ₹40,000 per milch animal (up to three animals).
• ₹32,000 per large draught animal.
• ₹20,000 per small draught animal.
• ₹4,000 each for goats, sheep, and pigs.
• ₹100 per poultry bird, subject to a maximum of ₹10,000.
• ₹5,000 for damaged poultry sheds.

Fishermen will also receive dedicated support:

• ₹10,000 for partially damaged fishing boats.
• ₹25,000 for completely damaged fishing boats.
• ₹5,000 for partially damaged fishing nets.
• ₹6,000 for completely damaged fishing nets.

Direct Benefit Transfer After Damage Assessment

The Maharashtra Government has clarified that financial assistance will be released only after official damage assessments are completed by the concerned authorities.

Once verification is complete, the approved relief amount will be transferred directly into the beneficiaries' bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

To ensure transparency, District Collectors have also been directed to publish the final list of beneficiaries along with details of the financial assistance distributed on their respective district websites.

Relief Package Aims to Speed Up Recovery

The newly announced special relief package is expected to provide meaningful financial support to thousands of flood-affected families across Palghar district and Vasai-Virar. By covering losses related to housing, household essentials, businesses, livestock, and fisheries, the initiative is designed to help residents recover more quickly and restore their livelihoods after the devastating floods.
