Maharashtra Approves ₹230 Crore Plan to Develop Phulewada in Pune Ahead of Jyotiba Phule’s 200th Birth Anniversary

The Maharashtra government has approved a ₹230 crore development plan for Phulewada in Pune, the historic residence of social reformers Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule. The project aims to improve the historic site through beautification, infrastructure upgrades, and the acquisition of additional land ahead of Jyotiba Phule’s 200th birth anniversary.

Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced the decision on Wednesday following a special meeting of the state cabinet sub-committee on Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

Maharashtra Plans Major Upgrades at Phulewada in Pune

The development project will focus on preserving and improving Phulewada, which holds an important place in Maharashtra’s history of social reform and education. The approved ₹230 crore plan includes beautification work and the purchase of additional land to support the site's comprehensive development.

The initiative aims to honor the contributions of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule, who worked to promote education, equality, and social justice.

Bhidewada Memorial to Be Completed Within Three Weeks

The state government has also set a three-week deadline to complete the memorial at Bhidewada in Pune. Savitribai Phule started her pioneering school for girls at this historic location, making it an important landmark in India's history of women's education.

The government’s decision highlights its focus on preserving sites connected with the Phule family and their contribution to social progress.

Maharashtra to Build 500-Seat Hostels in All 36 Districts

As part of its broader welfare initiatives, the Maharashtra government has decided to establish hostels with accommodation for 500 students each in all 36 districts of the state.

The hostels will support students from Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Vimukta Jatis, and Nomadic Tribes (VJNT). The revenue department will provide land for these facilities at a nominal cost of ₹1, while the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) has prepared the building designs.

The initiative aims to improve access to accommodation and educational opportunities for students from these communities.

Separate Budget Proposed for VJNT Communities

The government will work toward creating a separate budget allocation for Vimukta Jatis and Nomadic Tribes instead of combining their funding with the broader OBC budget.

According to the official release, a proposal to establish a separate budget head will be submitted to the finance department during the December legislative session. The move is intended to ensure that development funds reach VJNT communities more directly.

The state will also form an independent committee to study the socio-economic conditions of these communities and recommend steps to improve their access to development opportunities. The proposed committee will follow a model similar to the Shinde Committee, which was formed to examine the demands of the Maratha community.

Government Plans to Fill Vacant OBC Reserved Posts

The Maharashtra government has also decided to take steps to fill vacant positions reserved for OBC candidates across various departments.

The official release identified a backlog involving posts under the 27% OBC reservation category. Addressing these vacancies is expected to be an important part of the state's efforts to improve representation in government employment.

Additionally, the government plans to expand the scope of Mahajyoti, an institution that supports the welfare and development of OBC communities. Its expansion will follow a model similar to SARTHI, which promotes the social, educational, and economic progress of Maratha, Kunbi, and related communities.

Welfare Schemes to Be Named After Mahatma Jyotiba Phule

The state government has decided to name welfare initiatives implemented by 11 key departments after Mahatma Jyotiba Phule. These include the revenue, water supply, and forest departments, along with departments responsible for drought relief.

Separate government resolutions will be issued to formalize the decisions, Bawankule said.

The cabinet sub-committee also reviewed proposed construction costs for the planned OBC hostels. Estimates and designs submitted by three reputed architects will be examined at the next meeting before the government makes a final decision on construction rates.

Maharashtra Expands Social Welfare and Heritage Development

The decisions reflect Maharashtra's broader efforts to improve educational opportunities, strengthen welfare programs, and address the development needs of OBC and VJNT communities.

Alongside these measures, the ₹230 crore Phulewada project and the planned completion of the Bhidewada memorial will help preserve important landmarks associated with the Phules' legacy.

Through these initiatives, the state government aims to recognize the contributions of the pioneering social reformers while expanding access to education, employment, and development opportunities for historically disadvantaged communities.
