State Approves Major Welfare Reforms to Strengthen Financial Security for Registered Construction Workers

The Maharashtra government has approved a major upgrade to welfare benefits for registered construction workers, introducing higher financial compensation, larger pensions, expanded education assistance, and a new maternity support scheme. The reforms are designed to improve the long-term financial security of workers and their families while aligning state welfare programs with the Code on Social Security, 2020.

Labour Minister Adv. Akash Fundkar announced that the revised schemes will provide stronger social protection for lakhs of registered construction workers across Maharashtra. The updated benefits include increased compensation for death and disability, direct pension payments for senior workers, enhanced educational assistance for children, and financial support for women workers after childbirth.

Higher Financial Compensation for Worker Death and Disability

One of the biggest changes is the increase in compensation for families of registered construction workers.

Under the revised welfare package:

  • Families will receive ₹3.5 lakh in case of a worker's natural death.
  • Compensation for accidental death has been increased to ₹6.5 lakh.
  • Workers who suffer permanent disability due to an accident or other qualifying reasons will receive a one-time financial assistance of ₹2 lakh.

The revised compensation is expected to provide stronger financial protection to families facing unexpected hardships.

Annual Pension Increased for Senior Registered Workers

The Maharashtra government has also expanded pension benefits for construction workers who have spent years in the industry.

Registered workers who are 60 years or older and have maintained at least 10 years of continuous registration will now receive annual pension support ranging from ₹6,000 to ₹12,000. The pension amount will depend on the worker's registration period and will be transferred directly into eligible beneficiaries' bank accounts.

The revised pension structure is intended to provide a more reliable source of income after retirement.

Education Benefits Expanded for Workers' Children

The updated welfare schemes place a strong focus on improving educational opportunities for the children of construction workers.

The government has increased financial assistance for students who successfully complete Classes 9 and 11. Higher education support has also been expanded, including:

  • ₹1 lakh assistance for students pursuing medical education.
  • ₹60,000 support for engineering students.
  • Full reimbursement of tuition fees for students studying in Ministry of Defence-run Sainik Schools.
  • Annual financial assistance for students enrolled in other recognized Sainik Schools.

In another major step, the education scheme now covers students pursuing postgraduate degrees and PhD programs overseas. Under the revised policy, tuition fees will be paid directly to foreign universities, while eligible students will also receive approved allowances based on Central Government guidelines.

Additionally, the government will continue distributing free educational kits to the first two children of registered workers studying from Class 1 to Class 8, helping reduce the financial burden on families.

New Maternity Assistance Scheme Introduced

The revised welfare package also introduces a dedicated maternity benefit for registered women construction workers.

Eligible women workers will receive a one-time grant of ₹25,000 to help cover nutrition and medical expenses after childbirth. The benefit will be available for the worker's first two children, providing additional financial support during the early stages of motherhood.

The initiative aims to improve maternal health while reducing out-of-pocket expenses for working families.

Welfare Reforms Aligned With Social Security Code

According to Labour Minister Adv. Akash Fundkar, the revised welfare schemes have been designed in line with the Social Security Code, 2020, which encourages stronger social protection for workers in the organized and unorganized sectors.

The latest changes reflect the state's broader effort to improve welfare coverage for construction workers through enhanced financial assistance, retirement support, education funding, and family-focused benefits.

A Stronger Safety Net for Lakhs of Construction Workers

Construction workers play a vital role in Maharashtra's infrastructure and urban development. However, many families remain financially vulnerable due to workplace risks, irregular income, and limited access to social security.

With higher compensation for death and disability, expanded pension benefits, greater educational assistance, and new maternity support, the Maharashtra government aims to build a stronger welfare framework for registered construction workers. The revised schemes are expected to improve financial stability, encourage continued worker registration, and provide long-term support to thousands of worker families across the state.
