Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde Flies Commercial Air India Flight to Delhi After PM Modi’s Fuel Conservation Appeal

Thu May 21 2026

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde chose a commercial Air India flight from Mumbai to Delhi after PM Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation amid rising global crude prices. The decision highlights a government push for energy-efficient administrative practices. Shinde has previously reduced helicopter usage, minimized convoy vehicles, and switched to an electric vehicle. The move also coincides with his attendance at the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 review meeting in Delhi.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday chose to travel from Mumbai to Delhi on a commercial Air India passenger flight instead of using a private aircraft, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal for fuel conservation amid rising global oil prices.

The move is being viewed as a symbolic but significant gesture towards promoting fuel-saving measures among public representatives and government officials. Shinde’s decision also reflects the Maharashtra government’s growing emphasis on adopting cost-conscious and energy-efficient administrative practices in response to global fuel concerns.

Eknath Shinde Departed Mumbai on 4 PM Air India Flight

According to officials, Eknath Shinde departed from Mumbai to Delhi on a scheduled 4 pm Air India commercial flight on Tuesday.

The Deputy Chief Minister was seen interacting with passengers and supporters at Mumbai airport before boarding the flight. Several people greeted him, took photographs, and handed over memorandums during his departure.

The visit to Delhi is part of Shinde’s official schedule to attend a special review meeting related to the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 being organised by the Union Urban Development Department.

The two-day review meeting is expected to focus on urban cleanliness initiatives, municipal infrastructure, and implementation progress under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban framework.

Decision Follows PM Narendra Modi’s Appeal on Fuel Saving

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently appealed to citizens and political leaders to adopt fuel conservation practices in view of rising global crude oil prices and increasing pressure on fuel consumption.

Following the Prime Minister’s appeal, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had also reportedly conducted a special meeting and announced guidelines for ministers regarding fuel-saving measures.

Eknath Shinde’s decision to use a commercial passenger flight instead of private aviation is now being seen as a direct response to the Centre’s fuel conservation push.

Shinde Had Already Reduced Helicopter and Convoy Usage

Officials pointed out that this is not the first step taken by Eknath Shinde toward adopting fuel-saving practices.

According to officials:

  • Shinde had earlier switched to using an electric vehicle
  • Reduced the number of vehicles in his convoy
  • Cut down helicopter travel for official movement

The latest decision to use a commercial airline instead of a private aircraft adds another visible step toward implementing fuel efficiency measures within government functioning.

Commercial Travel Move Draws Public Attention

Shinde’s decision attracted attention at Mumbai airport, especially because senior political leaders and ministers generally travel using private aircraft for official visits.

Passengers and supporters present at the airport reportedly welcomed the move and interacted with the Deputy Chief Minister before departure.

The decision is also being discussed as a public demonstration of administrative alignment with the Prime Minister’s larger message regarding responsible fuel consumption and resource management.

Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 Review Meeting in Delhi

During his Delhi visit, Eknath Shinde is expected to participate in discussions related to the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 programme.

The review meeting organised by the Union Urban Development Department is likely to focus on:

  • Urban sanitation projects
  • Municipal waste management systems
  • Cleanliness infrastructure
  • Implementation progress across states

Shinde is scheduled to attend the review meeting personally on Wednesday as part of Maharashtra’s participation in the national urban development programme.

Fuel Conservation Push Gains Momentum

The latest development indicates that fuel conservation measures are increasingly becoming part of administrative and political decision-making at both central and state government levels.

With rising global oil prices continuing to impact fuel economics, governments are encouraging public representatives and departments to adopt practical measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption and improving operational efficiency.

Eknath Shinde’s decision to opt for commercial air travel instead of private aviation is now being viewed as a high-visibility example of that broader policy direction.
