Maharashtra Launches Maha R-PET Initiative Across 13 Locations to Tackle Plastic Pollution

Maharashtra has launched the Maha R-PET initiative across 13 locations, marking a major step toward improving plastic recycling and encouraging people to take part in environmental protection.

Environment Minister Pankaja Munde said Maharashtra is the first state in India to launch the initiative on this scale. The program is being carried out with support from NGOs and does not involve direct spending by the state government.

Maha R-PET Initiative Begins in Thane

The state-level launch of the Maha R-PET bottle and campaign stickers was held at Taj Vivanta in Thane. The initiative is being jointly led by the Maharashtra government, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), and Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB).

The program aims to improve plastic collection and recycling while making citizens more aware of responsible plastic disposal.

The launch event brought together government officials, civic representatives, corporate leaders, film personalities, and local residents.

Pankaja Munde Calls for Greater Public Participation

Speaking at the event, Maharashtra Environment Minister Pankaja Munde highlighted the growing environmental impact of plastic pollution. She said protecting the environment requires both government action and active participation from citizens.

She encouraged people to dedicate at least one bottle to environmental protection and become part of the recycling movement.

The campaign focuses on a simple message: reducing plastic pollution requires changes in everyday habits along with better recycling systems.

Thane Hosts Maharashtra's Pilot Initiative

MLA Madhavi Naik welcomed the launch and said Thane is proud to host the state's pilot project. She also expressed support for efforts to reduce dependence on plastic and promote more sustainable practices among residents.

Local representatives and citizens were encouraged to participate actively in the campaign and help make plastic recycling a regular part of community life.

Maha R-PET Campaign to Expand Across Maharashtra

MLC Niranjan Davkhare said the campaign is expected to expand across Maharashtra in the coming period. The initiative also aims to encourage more companies to take responsibility for reducing plastic waste through corporate environmental programs.

Additional Collector Harischandra Patil assured administrative support from the district administration to help the campaign reach more people.

HCCB Supports Community-Level Plastic Management

Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages representative Rahul Rekhavat said the initiative builds on the company's earlier efforts in Mumbai that began in February 2026.

The program is designed to bring plastic management closer to local communities while supporting the LiFE, or Lifestyle for Environment, framework. The company has also linked the initiative with its long-term sustainability goal of supporting carbon neutrality by 2047.

Citizens Take Pledge for Plastic Recycling

The event ended with government representatives, corporate leaders, and citizens taking a collective pledge to support plastic recycling and adopt more sustainable habits.

With the Maha R-PET initiative now active at 13 locations, Maharashtra is seeking to build stronger public participation in plastic collection and recycling while creating greater awareness about the need to protect the environment.
