Maharashtra Metro Expansion Targets 300+ Km by 2030

₹2.80 Lakh Crore Metro Plan Aims To Deliver Faster, Greener And More Connected Urban Transport

Maharashtra is preparing for one of the country's biggest urban transport transformations, with the state government aiming to make more than 300 kilometers of new metro corridors operational by 2030. The ambitious expansion plan, backed by an investment of ₹2.80 lakh crore, is expected to improve public transportation in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) while supporting the state's long-term urban development goals.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the roadmap during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure, where he directed officials to ensure that metro projects are completed within three years from the start of construction. The move is aimed at speeding up project execution and providing commuters with modern, reliable, and environmentally friendly transportation.

Metro Network Set For Major Expansion

The Maharashtra government is steadily expanding its metro infrastructure to meet the transportation needs of rapidly growing cities.

According to officials, the state currently has 174 kilometers of operational metro corridors, while construction is underway on 291 kilometers of additional lines. Another 130 kilometers of metro projects are awaiting approvals, and Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are being prepared for another 87.15 kilometers of future corridors.

Once all planned and approved projects are completed, Maharashtra's metro network is expected to cover 683.53 kilometers, making it one of India's largest integrated metro systems.

The proposed network includes:

• 428.89 km across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR)
• 169.45 km in the Pune Metropolitan Region
• 85.20 km in the Nagpur Metropolitan Region

The expanded network is expected to reduce travel time, ease road congestion, and encourage greater use of public transport.

₹2.80 Lakh Crore Investment To Transform Urban Mobility

The state's metro expansion program represents a total investment of ₹2.80 lakh crore, with funding coming from multiple sources.

The Central Government will contribute approximately ₹27,216 crore, while the Maharashtra Government will provide ₹50,250 crore.

An additional ₹75,729.62 crore will be mobilized through the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), local civic bodies, and planning authorities. The remaining project costs will be financed through government-backed loans.

Officials believe this financial model will help accelerate metro development while creating a sustainable transportation network for future generations.

More Than 300 Km Of Metro Lines Planned By 2030

The government has set ambitious milestones for the coming years.

During the current year, Maharashtra plans to operationalize 87 kilometers of metro lines along with 56 new stations.

By 2029-30, the state aims to commission 302 kilometers of additional metro corridors and 161 new metro stations, significantly improving public transport access across major cities.

The expansion is expected to strengthen connectivity between residential areas, business districts, airports, railway stations, and industrial hubs.

Metro Line 10 To Improve Connectivity In Mira-Bhayandar Region

The meeting also reviewed progress on Metro Line 10, which will connect Mira Gaon to Gaimukh in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The 9.68-kilometer elevated corridor, estimated to cost around ₹8,500 crore, will include five stations and improve connectivity for commuters traveling between the northern suburbs and Thane.

Chief Minister Fadnavis instructed officials to begin construction immediately after receiving all statutory approvals and complete the project within three years.

Several New Metro Corridors In The Pipeline

Maharashtra is also planning several major metro projects that will further strengthen urban transportation across the state.

Some of the key proposed projects include:

• Metro Line 11 connecting Anik Depot to the Gateway of India
• Metro Line 8 linking Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport with Navi Mumbai International Airport
• Metro Line 13 connecting Shivaji Chowk and Vasai-Virar
• Metro Line 14 between Kanjur and Badlapur
• Pune Metro Phase III, extending connectivity to Nigdi, Wakad, Nashik Phata, and Chakan

These projects are expected to improve regional mobility, support economic growth, and make daily commuting faster and more convenient.

A Long-Term Vision For Sustainable Urban Growth

With rapid urbanization increasing pressure on road infrastructure, Maharashtra is focusing on expanding mass transit systems that are efficient, reliable, and environmentally sustainable.

The planned metro expansion is expected to encourage greater use of public transportation, reduce traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, and improve the quality of life for millions of residents.

As construction progresses over the coming years, Maharashtra's growing metro network is set to become a key driver of modern urban mobility and economic development, positioning the state among India's leading regions for integrated public transport infrastructure.
