New Digital Platform Makes Official Maharashtra Government Books Easier to Access Nationwide

The Maharashtra government has introduced a new digital platform that allows citizens to buy official government publications online and receive them at their doorstep through India Post. The initiative is aimed at improving public access to government books, reports, and official documents while bringing the state's publication services into the digital era.

The new portal, mahapublications.maharashtra.gov.in, has been approved by the state's Industry, Energy, Labour and Mining Department. It will offer a simple online system for purchasing government publications, making them available to readers across India without the need to visit government libraries or book exhibitions.

Maharashtra Moves Government Publications Online

Until now, government publications in Maharashtra were mainly available through offline sales at government libraries and special book exhibitions. Buyers had to visit these locations and make cash payments to purchase official books and documents.

With the launch of the new online platform, citizens can now browse available publications, place orders digitally, and receive deliveries through India Post. The move follows the growing trend of digital book sales already adopted by private publishers, making government publications more accessible to the public.

Officials said the initiative is designed to create a more citizen-friendly system while expanding the reach of government literature.

Portal Developed by MahaIT Corporation

The new Online and Counter Book Store Application is being developed by MahaIT Corporation Ltd, the state's information technology agency. The platform has been designed to support both online purchases and traditional counter sales from a single digital system.

To ensure smooth operations, the government will deploy two computer operators at the Directorate of Government Printing, Stationery and Publications. The operators will manage the platform and assist in processing online orders and publication records.

The project is part of the Maharashtra government's broader effort to modernize public services through digital technology and improve the functioning of government departments.

Mumbai Chosen for Pilot Launch

The online service will first begin as a pilot project through the Government Library in Mumbai.

During the initial rollout, customers across India will be able to place online orders through the portal, while physical counter sales and book exhibition sales will continue without interruption.

Government printing presses and libraries located in Pune, Kolhapur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Nagpur will continue offering over-the-counter sales using the same digital platform until the online service is expanded further.

Officials expect the pilot phase to help evaluate system performance before introducing the service on a larger scale across Maharashtra.

India Post to Handle Nationwide Deliveries

A key feature of the new platform is doorstep delivery through India Post, allowing publications to be shipped to addresses anywhere in the country.

Delivery charges will not be fixed. Instead, postal costs will be calculated based on two factors:

  • The weight of the publication
  • The delivery distance to the customer's address

This pricing model is expected to ensure fair shipping charges while making government publications available to readers regardless of their location.

Government Libraries Receive Digital Upgrade

The new online bookstore is part of a larger modernization program for government libraries managed by the Directorate of Government Printing, Stationery and Publications.

Officials believe digitizing publication sales will improve efficiency, reduce dependence on manual cash transactions, and provide easier access to official books, reports, policy documents, and government reference material.

The initiative also supports the state's ongoing digital governance efforts, which focus on improving transparency, accessibility, and citizen services through technology.

Easier Access for Citizens Across India

The launch of the online publication portal removes one of the biggest barriers faced by readers interested in government publications—physical availability. Previously, many citizens outside Mumbai or other major cities had limited access to official publications unless they visited government libraries or exhibitions in person.

With online ordering and nationwide delivery now available, students, researchers, professionals, government employees, and general readers can access official Maharashtra government publications more conveniently.

The initiative is expected to increase public engagement with government documents while making important publications easier to obtain from anywhere in India.

Maharashtra Continues Expanding Digital Public Services

The introduction of the online government publication portal reflects Maharashtra's continued investment in digital governance and citizen-focused services. By combining online ordering with India Post's nationwide delivery network, the state aims to provide faster, more convenient access to official publications while improving the overall experience for users.

If the pilot project proves successful, the platform could become the primary channel for distributing Maharashtra government publications, supporting wider public access and strengthening the state's digital service infrastructure.
