Maharashtra School Admission Age Rule: Class 1 Minimum Age Set at 6 From 2030-31
Maharashtra will introduce a new school admission age policy in phases, starting with nursery in 2027-28. The changes aim to bring a common age standard across school boards and align admissions with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The Maharashtra government has announced a new age policy for school admissions, setting the minimum age for Class 1 at six years from the 2030-31 academic year. The new rules will be introduced gradually, beginning with nursery admissions in 2027-28, giving families and schools time to prepare for the transition.
According to a government resolution issued by the School Education Department, a child's age will be calculated as of June 30 of the relevant academic year. The policy aims to bring greater consistency to admission requirements across different school boards and support the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Maharashtra School Admission Age Rule: Year-Wise Schedule
The new policy will introduce minimum age requirements for nursery, junior kindergarten, senior kindergarten and Class 1 over four academic years.

Why Is Maharashtra Changing the Class 1 Admission Age?
The state government identified differences in age requirements and cutoff dates across school boards as a key reason for introducing the new policy. These include the Maharashtra State Board, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) and International Baccalaureate (IB).
The government also noted the need for a common minimum age for children entering pre-primary education.
The revised policy is intended to create a more uniform admission system and ensure that children begin formal schooling at an appropriate age. It also supports the National Education Policy 2020, which recommends a five-year foundational stage consisting of three years of pre-primary education, followed by Classes 1 and 2.
By introducing the changes in stages, Maharashtra aims to give schools, parents and children enough time to adjust to the new admission requirements.
Will the New Admission Rules Affect Children Already in School?
The new age requirements will not affect children who are already enrolled in nursery, kindergarten or Class 1 during the 2026-27 academic year.
Students who have completed the previous class at a recognized school will also be exempt from the revised age criteria when moving to the next grade, as specified in the government resolution.
This provision is intended to protect children already progressing through the school system from facing admission difficulties because of the policy change.
Parents should check the official guidelines to understand how the exemption applies to their child's circumstances.
Maharashtra Allows 15-Day Age Relaxation for School Admissions
The government resolution also provides for a 15-day relaxation in the minimum and maximum age limits for admissions from nursery through Class 1.
Parents should consult the detailed instructions from the Directorate of Primary Education, Pune, to understand the conditions and application of this relaxation.
The June 30 cutoff date will remain the reference point for calculating a child's age under the new admission framework, subject to the provisions specified in the official guidelines.
What Parents Should Know Before Applying for School Admission
Families planning to enroll their children in nursery, kindergarten or Class 1 should keep the new schedule in mind while preparing for future admissions.
Parents should confirm their child's eligibility based on the applicable academic year and age cutoff date. They should also follow announcements from the Maharashtra School Education Department and the Directorate of Primary Education for updates on admission procedures and age relaxation.
With the phased rollout beginning in 2027-28, the state aims to establish a more consistent school admission system while giving families time to plan their children's early education.
