Cooperative Ride-Hailing Model Aims to Empower Taxi Drivers Across the State

Maharashtra is preparing to launch 'Namo Sahakar Taxi', a new cooperative-based ride-hailing platform designed to give taxi drivers greater financial security and a direct ownership stake in the business. The initiative has received approval from the Maharashtra government and the Chief Minister, while the state has also secured the required aggregator license to operate the service.

The platform is expected to introduce a new model where drivers are not just service providers but shareholders who benefit directly from the platform’s earnings.

Drivers to Share Profits Instead of Paying Private Aggregators

Speaking to taxi driver-owner associations and drivers, BJP MLC Pravin Darekar said the cooperative model has been created to ensure drivers receive a fair share of profits instead of working solely for private ride-hailing companies.

Under the new system, registered drivers will become shareholders, allowing them to earn directly through the cooperative structure. The mobile application for the platform has already been developed, and drivers will receive guidance on how the service operates and how it protects their interests.

First Phase to Begin with 2,000 Registered Drivers

The project has already attracted strong interest, with nearly 2,000 drivers registered for the launch phase. Initially, 2,000 taxis are expected to join the platform, while 200 to 300 taxis are likely to begin operations within the next 15 days.

The phased rollout aims to ensure smooth implementation before expanding the service to more drivers across Maharashtra.

Focus on Driver Welfare and Employment

Beyond ride-booking services, the initiative also includes several welfare measures for drivers and their families. According to Darekar, the cooperative model will provide:

• Job security for registered drivers
• Financial support for children's education
• Insurance coverage
• Interest-free loans
• Professional training programs for drivers
• Skill development opportunities for Marathi youth interested in the transport sector

The initiative is open to all eligible drivers regardless of caste, religion, or political affiliation, with the broader goal of creating sustainable employment opportunities.

Expansion Planned Beyond Maharashtra

The 'Namo Sahakar Taxi' platform will first be introduced across Maharashtra before being expanded to other parts of India. The cooperative model aims to build a more inclusive and driver-focused ride-hailing ecosystem by ensuring drivers receive ownership benefits alongside their daily earnings.

Supporters of the initiative believe the platform could offer a sustainable alternative to conventional ride-hailing services by placing drivers at the center of the business model and promoting long-term financial stability.

With government approval, an operational mobile application, and thousands of drivers already registered, 'Namo Sahakar Taxi' is positioned to introduce a cooperative approach to the ride-hailing industry.
