Maharashtra, Torrent Power, JSW Energy Sign Nuclear MoUs

Projects totaling 4,200 MW are expected to strengthen clean power supply and create nearly 11,700 direct and indirect jobs across the state.

Maharashtra has taken a major step toward expanding its clean energy capacity by signing two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Torrent Power Ltd and JSW Energy Ltd for proposed nuclear power projects worth a combined ₹79,000 crore.

The two projects will have a total planned capacity of 4,200 MW and are expected to create around 11,700 direct and indirect employment opportunities. The agreements are part of Maharashtra’s wider efforts to build a reliable and cleaner electricity supply for the state’s growing energy needs.

JSW Energy Plans 2,800 MW Nuclear Project in Ratnagiri

Under its agreement with the Maharashtra government, JSW Energy has proposed a 2,800 MW nuclear power project at Bhivbandar in Agari village, Dapoli taluka, Ratnagiri district.

The project will include four units, each with a capacity of 700 MW. Development is planned in two phases, with 1,400 MW targeted in each phase.

The project is expected to involve an investment of approximately ₹44,000 crore. According to the proposal, it could generate between 8,000 and 10,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, providing a significant boost to the local economy.

Torrent Power Proposes 1,400 MW Nuclear Facility

Torrent Power has proposed another nuclear power project with a planned capacity of 1,400 MW. The project would consist of two 700 MW units.

The proposed facility is planned for Ratnagiri district or another suitable location in Maharashtra. It is expected to attract an investment of around ₹35,000 crore and create approximately 1,700 employment opportunities.

Together, the JSW Energy and Torrent Power projects represent a major investment in Maharashtra’s future energy infrastructure.

Nuclear Power to Support Reliable Clean Energy

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said nuclear energy will be important in meeting Maharashtra’s rising demand for clean and dependable electricity.

Maharashtra has already expanded its renewable energy capacity through solar and wind projects and is also working on pumped-storage power projects. However, nuclear energy can provide stable baseload power and help maintain a reliable electricity supply throughout the year.

The latest MoUs reflect the state government’s focus on combining renewable energy with dependable power sources to support long-term economic and industrial growth.

Private Investment Opens New Opportunities

Fadnavis said the Centre’s approval of the SHANTI law has opened new opportunities for private investment in the nuclear energy sector.

The state government is expected to provide necessary support and cooperation to companies investing in this emerging sector. Increased private participation could also help accelerate the development of large-scale energy projects and create new employment opportunities.

Maharashtra Expands Nuclear Energy Plans

The latest agreements are part of Maharashtra’s broader plans to increase nuclear power generation. Projects with a combined proposed capacity of about 20,400 MW are currently being pursued across the state.

Other proposed locations include Barsu in Ratnagiri and Devgad in Sindhudurg.

With large investments, new employment opportunities and a focus on reliable clean electricity, Maharashtra is positioning nuclear power as an important part of its long-term energy strategy.
