MahaVitaran Plans ₹360 Crore Power Upgrade in Navi Mumbai
Sat Jun 20 2026
Major Infrastructure Push Planned To Meet Rising Electricity Demand
To improve electricity reliability and prepare for future demand, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MahaVitaran) has proposed a large-scale infrastructure upgrade worth ₹360 crore for Panvel and Navi Mumbai. The plan focuses on strengthening the existing power distribution network and reducing the chances of frequent outages in fast-growing residential areas.
Out of the total proposed investment, projects worth ₹195 crore have been specially allocated for the Panvel region.
Power Strengthening Plan Reviewed At Panvel Civic Headquarters
The details of the proposed power development programme were presented during a review meeting held at the Panvel Municipal Corporation headquarters.
The meeting was organized under the leadership of Member of Parliament Shrirang Appa Barne to review the steps being taken to manage increasing electricity consumption across Panvel and nearby areas.
Officials discussed ongoing challenges in maintaining uninterrupted supply and shared future plans aimed at improving overall power infrastructure.
Substation Capacity To Increase Across Key Locations
As part of the proposed action plan, MahaVitaran has planned major upgrades at several substations in Panvel.
The substations located at Khanda Colony, Kalpataru, Topal Naka and New Panvel Sector-7 are expected to receive an additional capacity of 10 MVA each. These upgrades are intended to support growing electricity usage and reduce load pressure on the network.
A new 33/22 kV substation has also been proposed in the rapidly developing Rohinjan–Dhansar area, where increasing residential projects have created higher electricity demand.
Additionally, the Nere substation will undergo a 10 MVA expansion, which is expected to provide nearly 60 MVA of additional electricity capacity for Panvel’s rural belt and surrounding areas.
Approval Awaited; Completion Expected Within Two Years
Officials informed during the meeting that the proposal has already been submitted to MahaVitaran headquarters at Prakashgad in Mumbai for approval.
Formal approval is still pending. Once sanctioned, the utility expects the infrastructure work and commissioning process to be completed within approximately two years.
New Transmission Line To Improve Network Connectivity
To further strengthen the distribution network, MahaVitaran has also planned to build a new transmission line connecting Sector-18 and Sector-29.
The new line will draw power from the recently operational 220 kV, 100 MVA substation at Panchanand Nagar in Taloja. This move is expected to improve electricity flow and create better load management across the region.
Frequent Power Cuts Trigger Urgent Action
The infrastructure proposal comes after repeated power outages affected several parts of Panvel over the last few weeks, leading to growing dissatisfaction among residents.
Public complaints and concerns over unreliable electricity supply prompted local representatives to seek government intervention.
Following these developments, Minister of State Meghna Bordikar reportedly directed senior MahaVitaran officials to inspect the Kamothe substation and prepare immediate and long-term measures to improve service reliability.
Focus On Future Growth And Reliable Electricity Supply
With rapid urban expansion and continuous residential development across Panvel and Navi Mumbai, electricity demand is increasing every year.
Through this ₹360 crore modernization proposal, MahaVitaran aims to create a stronger and more dependable power network that can meet both present and future requirements while reducing the risk of unexpected outages.
