MHADA Gives Kon Panvel Mill Workers Final 8-Day Chance to Claim Homes

Remaining Lottery Winners Get One Last Opportunity to Complete Possession Formalities

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has announced a final eight-day opportunity for mill workers who won homes in the Kon, Panvel housing project but have not yet taken possession of their allotted flats.

The Mumbai Board of MHADA conducted a housing lottery in 2016 for 2,417 homes at Kon in Panvel. The homes were developed as part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) rental housing initiative, with a significant share reserved for mill workers. The possession process for successful applicants began in 2024.

According to MHADA officials, 1,251 successful lottery winners have already completed the required formalities and taken possession of their homes. However, 1,166 winners are yet to complete the process.

MHADA Announces Final 8 Day Deadline for Kon Panvel Mill Workers

MHADA will now issue a public notice giving the remaining winners a final eight-day window to come forward, submit the required documents and complete the possession process.

Those who respond within the deadline will be able to proceed with taking possession of their allotted flats.

However, winners who do not respond during this final opportunity could lose their claim to the allotted homes. MHADA is preparing to move ahead with the next step by offering the vacant homes to eligible beneficiaries from the waiting list.

The move is aimed at ensuring that homes already allotted through the lottery are not left unused when other eligible mill workers are waiting for housing opportunities.

Waiting List Beneficiaries Could Receive Vacant Homes

MHADA has previously provided several opportunities to the remaining lottery winners to complete their documentation and take possession. Despite these efforts, 1,166 winners have not yet completed the process.

This has also affected beneficiaries who are on the waiting list and are expecting an opportunity to receive a home.

If the remaining winners fail to respond within the final eight-day period, MHADA plans to begin the process of offering the available homes to eligible waiting-list beneficiaries.

Mumbai Board Chief Officer Milind Borikar said that the process for giving possession to waiting-list beneficiaries will begin if the remaining winners do not respond within the final deadline.

Kon Panvel Project Supports Mill Workers' Housing Needs

The Kon, Panvel housing project is part of a larger government effort to provide affordable housing opportunities to mill workers in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The state government has reserved 50 percent of homes in MMRDA rental housing projects for mill workers due to the limited availability of affordable housing for this community in Mumbai.

The 2,417 homes at Kon, Panvel were included in the 2016 MHADA lottery, and eligible winners began receiving possession from 2024.

The latest decision is expected to help MHADA make better use of completed homes while giving waiting-list beneficiaries a possible opportunity to secure housing.

Final Opportunity for Kon Panvel Lottery Winners

Mill workers who won homes in the Kon, Panvel MHADA lottery but have not yet taken possession are advised to complete all required formalities within the eight-day deadline.

The decision also reflects MHADA's broader focus on ensuring that housing benefits reach eligible beneficiaries without unnecessary delays. Under the leadership and administrative oversight of senior officials including IAS Sanjeev Jaiswal, MHADA continues to focus on improving housing delivery and completing pending possession processes.

Winners who miss this final opportunity may lose their claim to the allotted home, after which MHADA could begin the process of offering the vacant flats to eligible beneficiaries on the waiting list.
