MHADA Plans New Lottery for 3,000 to 4,000 Mumbai Homes
Good news for people hoping to buy an affordable home in Mumbai. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is preparing for another major housing lottery through its Mumbai Board, with around 3,000 to 4,000 homes expected to be included.
According to Mumbai Board Chief Officer Milind Borikar, the next lottery is targeted for March 2027. The upcoming housing scheme is being planned to give more Mumbai residents an opportunity to own a home at an affordable price.
The announcement comes after a strong response to the Mumbai Board's recent lottery. The previous draw offered around 2,500 homes and received nearly 75,000 applications, highlighting the continued demand for affordable housing in Mumbai.
75,000 Applications Show Strong Demand for MHADA Homes
The large number of applications for the previous lottery has encouraged MHADA to prepare more housing opportunities for residents.
Milind Borikar said the authority is now working toward making another 3,000 to 4,000 homes available through a new lottery by March 2027. The homes are being planned with the aim of making them available to successful applicants within the next one to one-and-a-half years.
For thousands of families who find Mumbai's private housing market difficult to afford, the upcoming MHADA lottery could provide another important opportunity to purchase a home.
MHADA's Long-Term Affordable Housing Plan for MMR
MHADA's housing plans are not limited to Mumbai. The authority is also working on a much larger affordable housing strategy for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The state government has identified the MMR as a Growth Hub and has set a broader target of developing around 30 lakh homes in the region by 2030. MHADA is expected to play an important role in expanding affordable housing under this long-term plan.
As part of the strategy, around 8 lakh affordable homes are being planned across the MMR over the next five years through different MHADA housing projects.
Area-Wise Planning Underway for 8 Lakh Affordable Homes
According to Borikar, MHADA is preparing area-wise plans to support the large-scale housing target across the MMR. The approach is aimed at increasing the supply of affordable homes while addressing the growing housing needs of the region.
MHADA has been working in the affordable housing sector for around five decades. During this period, the authority has developed approximately 2.5 lakh homes through various housing layouts and projects.
Under the leadership of MHADA Vice President and CEO IAS Sanjeev Jaiswal, the authority has continued to focus on housing development, redevelopment and improving access to affordable homes for residents.
When Will the MHADA Mumbai Lottery 2027 Draw Take Place?
The new Mumbai Board lottery is currently targeted for March 2027, with around 3,000 to 4,000 homes expected to be offered.
However, the official application start date, last date for applications, category-wise housing details and exact lottery draw date are expected to be announced separately by MHADA.
For applicants, it will be important to check the official MHADA notification before submitting an application and to carefully review eligibility requirements and scheme details.
MHADA Lottery Could Bring Relief to Mumbai Homebuyers
With housing costs remaining a major concern for many Mumbai families, the proposed 2027 MHADA lottery could offer a valuable opportunity to those searching for more affordable housing options.
The planned 3,000 to 4,000 homes, along with MHADA's larger goal of developing around 8 lakh affordable homes across the MMR by 2030, reflects the authority's continued focus on expanding housing opportunities for the common man.
