MHADA Plans 12,000 New Homes for Mumbai Mill Workers in Thane, With 4,500 Homes Planned in Hedutne
The MHADA Mumbai Board is preparing to acquire land in Hedutne and Uttarshiv in Thane district to build 12,000 homes for eligible mill workers and their heirs.
The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is moving forward with plans to address the long-standing housing needs of Mumbai’s mill workers and their families. The Mumbai Board is preparing to take possession of land in Hedutne and Uttarshiv in Thane district, where approximately 12,000 homes are planned for eligible mill workers and their legal heirs.
The development is expected to provide relief to thousands of families who are still waiting for housing under the mill workers’ housing scheme. The board has completed the land measurement process for approximately 4.7 hectares in Hedutne, and the land is expected to come under its possession soon. Around 4,500 homes are planned at this location.
MHADA to Build 12,000 Homes on Land in Hedutne and Uttarshiv
The Mumbai Board has identified two sites in Thane district to help meet the housing demand among mill workers. The state government has approved the allocation of approximately 4.5 hectares in Hedutne and 7.5 hectares in Uttarshiv for the proposed housing projects.
The land in Hedutne is expected to be transferred to the board after the completion of the necessary formalities. Meanwhile, the measurement process for the Uttarshiv site is expected to begin soon. Once the process is completed and the land is handed over, MHADA will move ahead with the next stages of development.
Together, the two sites are expected to accommodate approximately 12,000 homes for eligible mill workers and their heirs. The board will begin construction-related procedures, including the tender process, after acquiring the land.
More Than 2.5 Lakh Applications Received for Mill Workers’ Housing
The demand for homes under MHADA’s mill workers’ housing scheme remains high. The authority has received approximately 2.5 lakh applications under the scheme. So far, around 16,000 mill workers have received homes, while approximately 1.09 lakh workers have been declared eligible.
With limited land available within Greater Mumbai to meet the remaining housing demand, the state government directed MHADA to identify suitable sites in the wider Mumbai region. Following this direction, the Mumbai Board submitted proposals for land in Hedutne and Uttarshiv, which received government approval.
The proposed projects are intended to expand housing opportunities for eligible applicants who have been waiting for homes under the scheme.
Hedutne Land to Be Transferred at a Nominal Rate
The state government has approved the transfer of the identified land to the Mumbai Board at a nominal rate of ₹1 per square meter. The completion of land measurement in Hedutne marks an important step toward taking possession and moving the proposed housing project forward.
After the Uttarshiv land measurement is completed and possession is secured, MHADA will proceed with the required development and tender formalities for that site as well.
Sanjeev Jaiswal’s Leadership Supports MHADA’s Housing Efforts
Under the leadership of Sanjeev Jaiswal, Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of MHADA, the authority continues to work toward addressing housing needs and advancing solutions for eligible mill workers and their families.
The planned development of 12,000 homes across Hedutne and Uttarshiv represents an important step toward easing the housing shortage faced by Mumbai’s mill workers and their heirs. Once the land transfer and construction processes move forward, the projects are expected to create additional housing opportunities for thousands of eligible families.
