MHADA Sangli Housing Scheme: Homes From Just 15 Lakh
Mon Jul 27 2026
Highlight: Affordable housing succeeds when transparent allotment, basic infrastructure, and inclusive planning work together to turn ownership into reality.
The dream of owning a home often feels out of reach for middle income and economically weaker families. However, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is steadily proving that affordable housing can move beyond promises and become a practical reality. In Sangli district, the MHADA Pune Board, working in association with the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), has helped 354 families secure their own homes over the last decade through transparent and affordable housing schemes.
Under the leadership of IAS Sanjeev Jaiswal, Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of MHADA, the authority has continued to strengthen its focus on transparent housing delivery, citizen centric governance, and expanding affordable housing opportunities across Maharashtra. The Sangli housing initiative reflects this larger vision by combining fair computerized allotment, affordable pricing, and planned infrastructure to make home ownership accessible to deserving families.
MHADA Sangli Housing Scheme Delivers Affordable Housing at Scale
The Sangli housing initiative demonstrates how long term planning can steadily improve housing access instead of relying on one time announcements. During the past ten years, MHADA and PMAY have jointly enabled 354 families across Sangli district to become homeowners through affordable housing projects.
The homes were allotted through a computerized lottery system along with the First Come, First Served method for eligible properties. This transparent approach reduces uncertainty in the allotment process while ensuring fairness for applicants from different income groups.
The successful completion of these allotments also highlights how housing schemes can generate confidence among citizens when transparency remains at the center of implementation.
34 New Flats in Miraj Ready for Allotment
The next phase of affordable housing is already taking shape in the Bharatnagar area of Miraj.
MHADA has completed the construction of 34 new flats, which are now ready for customer allotment. Essential civic infrastructure, including electricity and drinking water facilities, has already been made available, ensuring that future residents can move into homes equipped with basic amenities.
Once these units are allotted, 34 more families will achieve the milestone of owning a permanent home.
Existing MHADA housing colonies in Chintamani Nagar, Karnal Road, Abhay Nagar, and Parijat Colony have already emerged as established residential neighborhoods, reflecting the long term value of planned affordable housing developments.
Affordable Homes Available From Just ₹15 Lakh
One of the strongest aspects of the Sangli housing scheme is affordability.
For many first time buyers, rising property prices remain the biggest barrier to home ownership. MHADA has attempted to bridge this gap by making homes available from just ₹15 lakh, offering a realistic opportunity for low and middle income families.
The current process also includes the allotment of some vacant houses that remained after the housing lottery conducted in February. Eligible applicants continue to have an opportunity to purchase these affordable homes without waiting for an entirely new housing cycle.
This pricing strategy significantly expands access to formal housing while reducing dependence on informal or unplanned settlements.
Inclusive Housing Through Reserved Categories
Affordable housing is not only about lower prices but also about equitable access.
MHADA has reserved 13 percent of the available homes for specific categories that require additional support. These include:
- Persons with disabilities
- Sportspersons
- Central Government employees
- State Government employees
Such reservation policies help ensure that housing opportunities reach diverse sections of society while maintaining transparency in the allotment process.
New MHADA Housing Projects Planned Across Sangli District
The Sangli initiative is not ending with the current inventory.
MHADA has already proposed several future housing projects across strategically identified locations, including:
- Mira Housing Society – 40 gunthas
- Parijat Colony – 12 gunthas
- Sanjaynagar and Abhaynagar – 13 gunthas
- Near Miraj Medical College – 12 gunthas
These proposed developments indicate that MHADA is planning for sustained housing supply rather than short term project execution.
A continuous pipeline of affordable housing projects can improve availability while meeting the growing demand from eligible homebuyers across the district.
Transparent Housing Requires More Than Construction
Building houses alone does not create successful communities.
The Sangli model demonstrates that housing projects become meaningful only when supported by essential civic infrastructure. According to Rahul Sakore, Chief Officer, MHADA Pune Division, coordination with the Municipal Corporation and Mahavitaran has been prioritised to provide necessary facilities such as electricity and drinking water before residents take possession.
This integrated approach reduces delays after allotment and improves the overall living experience for beneficiaries.
It also reflects an important shift in public housing, where project completion increasingly includes infrastructure readiness rather than simply finishing construction.
Who Can Apply for the MHADA Housing Scheme?
Applicants interested in the scheme must satisfy specific eligibility conditions.
An applicant must be at least 18 years of age and should have been a resident of Maharashtra for the last 15 years, supported by a valid domicile certificate. Additionally, neither the applicant nor any member of the applicant's family should already own a house.
These conditions are designed to ensure that the benefits of affordable housing reach genuinely eligible families seeking their first permanent home.
Why the Sangli Model Matters
Affordable housing programmes often succeed not because of the number of homes announced but because of the number of families who finally receive possession.
The Sangli initiative demonstrates how transparent computerized allotment, affordable pricing starting at ₹15 lakh, reservation for deserving categories, and readiness of civic infrastructure can work together to improve public confidence in government housing schemes.
With 354 families already benefiting over the past decade, 34 new flats ready in Miraj, and multiple future projects proposed across Sangli district, MHADA continues to build a structured pipeline of affordable housing opportunities. As Maharashtra expands its focus on planned urban development, initiatives such as these show that well designed housing policies can gradually transform home ownership from an aspiration into an achievable reality.
