Kasheli Depot Track Development Marks Major Progress for Metro Line 5 Expansion
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced a new ₹84.34 crore tender for track infrastructure at the Kasheli Depot under the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro Line 5 project. The move signals another important step toward completing one of the largest and most important metro corridors in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The contract will cover complete track development work including design, supply, installation, testing, and final commissioning of standard gauge tracks at the depot facility.
Officials indicated that the metro project is steadily advancing toward safety approvals and aims to begin passenger operations by the end of the year.
MMRDA Invites Bids for Full Track Installation Package
MMRDA has launched an online open e-tender to appoint a contractor for executing track-related works at Kasheli Depot.
The scope of the contract includes development and installation of both ballasted and ballastless standard gauge track systems, along with testing and commissioning activities necessary for future operations.
According to project details, the selected agency will receive 20 months to complete the assignment, including work during the monsoon season. The tender also includes a security deposit requirement of ₹42.17 lakh.
Kasheli Depot Plays a Critical Role in Metro Line 5 Operations
Kasheli Depot is considered one of the most important support facilities for Metro Line 5. Once completed, the depot will handle train maintenance, storage, and operational support for the corridor.
Metro Line 5 is designed to strengthen urban mobility across Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan—areas that continue to witness rapid residential and industrial growth.
Originally planned as a 22.38-kilometer metro corridor, the project has now expanded to 34.21 kilometers after approval of the additional Metro Line 5A extension.
This expansion is expected to significantly improve public transport access across multiple growing city zones.
Metro Line 5 Nears Safety Inspection Stage
Authorities stated that Phase 1 of Metro Line 5 is approaching the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) inspection phase, an essential process before commercial passenger operations can begin.
Completion of this stage will move the corridor closer to opening for public use.
Current targets indicate that passenger services may begin before the end of the year, providing a major transportation upgrade for daily commuters across the region.
Metro Line 5A Extension to Add New Elevated Stations
The newly approved Metro Line 5A extension will further improve regional connectivity by adding seven elevated stations:
- Durgadi
- Khadakpada
- Bhoirwadi
- Shivaji Path
- Shanti Nagar
- Shivaji Chowk
- Ulhasnagar
The extension will also create interchange opportunities with Metro Lines 5 and 12 while improving access to the Central Railway suburban network through Kalyan Junction.
Better Connectivity Expected to Reduce Traffic and Boost Growth
Once fully operational, Metro Line 5 is expected to reduce pressure on road traffic and suburban railway services while making travel faster and more efficient.
The project will improve connectivity across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Dombivli, and Ulhasnagar, creating smoother movement for commuters and businesses.
Infrastructure experts also believe the corridor will support stronger economic activity in Bhiwandi, which remains one of Asia’s largest warehousing and logistics centers.
With fresh infrastructure investments and expanding metro connectivity, Metro Line 5 is emerging as a major transportation project shaping the future growth of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
