MSRDC Advances 104-Km Vadhvan Port Expressway Project

Tue Jul 14 2026

Land Acquisition Proposal, CRZ Clearance, and Direct Port Connectivity Set To Transform Maharashtra's Freight Network

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has taken another major step toward building a new 104-kilometer access-controlled expressway that will connect the upcoming Vadhvan Port in Palghar district with the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg near Igatpuri. The corporation is preparing to seek the Maharashtra government's approval for land acquisition while simultaneously moving ahead with the mandatory Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance process.

The proposed corridor is expected to become one of Maharashtra's most important transport infrastructure projects by creating a high-speed route between the state's western coastline and its rapidly expanding inland road network.

MSRDC Prepares Land Acquisition Proposal

MSRDC officials said work is underway to finalize land acquisition estimates for the expressway. These estimates will be included in a proposal seeking administrative approval from the state government.

Once the government grants approval, the proposal will be forwarded to the district collectors concerned. The next phase will include land surveys, measurements, and the formal land acquisition process before construction activities can begin.

Officials believe completing these initial approvals on time will help maintain the project's development schedule.

Greenfield Expressway To Connect Samruddhi Mahamarg With Vadhvan Port

The proposed expressway will begin near Bharvir Khurd at Igatpuri, where it will connect directly with the Samruddhi Mahamarg. From there, it will extend westward to Tawa village near Charoti on National Highway 48.

The final stretch between Charoti and the upcoming Vadhvan Port will be developed separately by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), creating a continuous high-speed road network from central Maharashtra to India's future deep-sea port.

This coordinated approach between MSRDC and NHAI is expected to provide seamless cargo movement while reducing dependence on Mumbai's already congested highways.

CRZ Clearance Process Also Underway

Along with land acquisition, MSRDC has initiated the process of obtaining Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance.

Since parts of the proposed alignment pass through coastal regulation areas, environmental approval is mandatory before construction can begin. Securing CRZ clearance will be a key milestone for the project as it moves from planning to execution.

Infrastructure experts note that completing statutory environmental approvals early helps reduce delays during later stages of development.

Travel Time Between Igatpuri And Vadhvan Port To Reduce Significantly

One of the biggest benefits of the proposed expressway will be faster travel between central Maharashtra and the state's western coastline.

According to project estimates, the journey from Igatpuri to Vadhvan Port could take approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes after the corridor becomes operational. The dedicated access-controlled route will allow freight vehicles to avoid heavy traffic around the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, improving efficiency and lowering transportation costs.

The improved connectivity is also expected to benefit industries, exporters, manufacturers, and logistics operators that rely on faster cargo movement.

Expressway To Support India's Mega Vadhvan Port Project

The expressway is being planned alongside the development of the Vadhvan Deep Sea Port, which is expected to become one of India's largest and most advanced port projects.

By directly linking the port with the Samruddhi Mahamarg, the new corridor will provide faster access to major industrial regions across Maharashtra and central India. Industry experts believe this connection will strengthen supply chains, improve export competitiveness, and support long-term economic growth.

The project also aligns with the government's broader strategy of integrating ports, highways, freight corridors, and industrial clusters into a unified logistics network.

Future Airport Could Create Major Logistics Hub

The proposed expressway may gain even greater importance as the government continues to explore plans for a greenfield airport near Vadhvan Port.

If developed, the airport, combined with the deep-sea port and the new expressway, could transform the region into one of western India's largest multimodal logistics and industrial hubs. Such integrated infrastructure is expected to attract manufacturing investments, warehousing facilities, export-oriented industries, and employment opportunities across Palghar and neighboring districts.

With land acquisition preparations advancing and statutory approvals moving forward, the 104-km Vadhvan Port-Samruddhi Mahamarg Expressway represents another significant milestone in Maharashtra's long-term infrastructure expansion, aimed at strengthening freight mobility, improving regional connectivity, and supporting future economic development.
