MSRTC Looks to Reduce Manpower Costs Through Digital Ticketing

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is considering expanding conductorless bus services on selected routes as part of efforts to reduce operating costs and improve its financial position.

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has directed the corporation to give priority to routes where conductorless services can work effectively. The plan is aimed at reducing manpower expenses while increasing revenue and making better use of available resources.

The move is part of a broader effort by MSRTC to control unnecessary spending without depending only on higher ticket fares.

Mumbai-Pune and Mumbai-Thane Routes Already Testing the Model

MSRTC has already started testing conductorless services on routes such as Mumbai-Pune and Mumbai-Thane. These services use digital ticketing systems, QR codes and smart cards to reduce the need for conductors.

The system could help the corporation save money on selected shorter routes where passenger movement is easier to manage. Based on the results, officials are expected to study whether the model can also be introduced on longer-distance services.

However, longer routes may require additional planning because passengers often need more support during extended journeys.

Long-Distance Routes Could Bring New Challenges

One of the main concerns is how passengers would be assisted if a bus breaks down during a long journey. Traditionally, conductors help passengers move to another bus, manage luggage and provide information during such situations.

Without a conductor, these responsibilities could become more difficult, particularly when a bus develops a technical problem in a remote location.

Emergency situations could also require careful planning. If passengers need to leave the bus or transfer to another vehicle, the absence of a conductor could place additional pressure on the driver.

Senior Citizens and Passengers Needing Assistance Need Special Attention

Senior citizens, passengers with disabilities and people who need additional assistance may find it harder to manage without a conductor. Clear arrangements will therefore be important to ensure that passengers can receive help when required.

Pratap Sarnaik Calls for Higher Revenue and Lower Expenses

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has said that increasing ticket fares alone will not be enough to improve MSRTC's financial condition.

He emphasized the need to increase revenue, reduce unnecessary expenditure and improve services at the same time. According to him, a sustainable financial strategy should focus on both cost control and better passenger services.
