Mumbai AC Local Trains: Six Carsheds Get ₹199 Crore

Wed Aug 19 2026

Mumbai’s suburban railway network is preparing for a major upgrade as the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) begins work to strengthen six existing EMU carsheds. The project, estimated at ₹199 crore, is designed to support the maintenance of 238 new AC local trains expected to join the city’s suburban fleet in phases from 2027.

The upgrade is expected to improve maintenance capacity and help Mumbai prepare for the growing demand for comfortable and modern suburban train services.

Six Mumbai Carsheds Set for Major Upgrade

The improvement work will cover six important carsheds across Central and Western Railways.

On Western Railway, upgrades are planned at Mumbai Central, Kandivali and Virar. On Central Railway, the work will be carried out at Kurla, Kalwa and Sanpada.

The Western Railway portion of the project is estimated to cost around ₹159 crore, while the three Central Railway carsheds will require approximately ₹40 crore.

MRVC plans to complete the work within 24 months. Once upgraded, these facilities will be capable of supporting maintenance for both AC local trains and existing 12-coach and 15-coach non-AC suburban trains.

Existing Facilities to Support New AC Locals

The carshed upgrades are important because dedicated facilities for AC local trains may not be ready before the new fleet begins arriving.

Until dedicated AC depots become operational, the improved existing carsheds will provide the additional maintenance capacity needed for the new trains.

The project will allow railway authorities to make better use of existing infrastructure while preparing for the expansion of Mumbai’s AC local train services.

Dedicated AC Local Depots Also Planned

MRVC is also developing dedicated depots for AC local trains at Bhiwri on Central Railway and Vangaon on Western Railway.

Work at the Vangaon site is already underway. These dedicated facilities are expected to eventually provide specialized maintenance support for the expanding AC suburban fleet.

Until they are ready, the upgraded carsheds at six existing locations will play an important role in keeping the new trains in service.

Wide Range of Maintenance Work Planned

The upgraded facilities will support several key maintenance activities. These will include work on brakes, wheels, traction motors, doors, electrical equipment, batteries and bogies.

Special attention will also be required for the air-conditioning systems installed in the new trains. Maintenance teams will handle equipment such as compressors, blowers and temperature-control systems.

This expanded capability is expected to help railway authorities maintain the reliability and performance of AC local trains as their numbers increase across Mumbai’s suburban network.

238 New AC Local Trains Expected From 2027

The Mumbai suburban network is expected to receive 238 new AC local trains from 2027 onward. The trains are expected to be manufactured at three major production facilities: Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala and Modern Coach Factory in Rae Bareli.

The phased arrival of these trains will require stronger maintenance infrastructure across the suburban railway system.

Mumbai Local Network Prepares for a Modern Fleet

The ₹199 crore carshed upgrade marks an important step toward preparing Mumbai’s railway infrastructure for the next phase of suburban travel. By strengthening existing facilities while dedicated AC depots are developed, MRVC and the railways are working to ensure that the growing AC local fleet receives the maintenance support it needs.

With more modern trains expected from 2027, the investment could help create a stronger and more efficient maintenance network for Mumbai’s suburban commuters.
