Western Railway Unveils Major Upgrade for Mumbai Central Station

Western Railway has announced an ambitious redevelopment plan for Mumbai Central Station, aiming to transform the historic railway terminal into a modern multi-modal transport hub while preserving its heritage value. The project includes converting part of the station's nearly 100-year-old heritage building into a budget hotel and developing a new passenger plaza with modern facilities.

The redevelopment is designed to improve passenger convenience, enhance travel experiences, and generate additional non-fare revenue for the railway.

Budget Hotel To Open Inside Historic Station Building

As part of the redevelopment, the retiring rooms located on the third floor of the heritage building will close on July 31, with restoration work scheduled to begin on August 1.

The facility currently has 11 rooms, including two dormitories. However, only a few rooms are in use, while the rest have remained closed for several months due to low occupancy.

Railway officials have appointed a private operator to renovate, manage, and maintain the property. After refurbishment, the facility is expected to reopen within three to four months as a budget hotel offering both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned rooms for railway passengers.

Officials said the renovation will modernize the rooms without making structural changes, ensuring the heritage character of the building remains intact.

Historic Features Will Be Carefully Preserved

Each room measures approximately 200 square feet and includes an attached bathroom. During the renovation, original heritage elements such as decades-old teakwood cupboards will be preserved to maintain the building's historic charm.

Western Railway expects to generate nearly ₹50 lakh over five years through the licensing agreement with the private operator.

Metro Connectivity Strengthens Mumbai Central's Role

Mumbai Central has become an even more important transportation hub with the addition of Metro Line 3, providing faster connectivity between Mumbai Central and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

According to railway officials, passengers can now travel between the two major stations in about 15 to 20 minutes, making Mumbai Central a key interchange connecting Western Railway, Central Railway, and the city's metro network.

New Passenger Plaza Planned on Reclaimed Land

Alongside the heritage restoration, Western Railway has reclaimed nearly 1,500 square meters of land outside Mumbai Central Station after removing long-standing encroachments and illegal parking operations.

Officials said the cleared space will now be transformed into a passenger-friendly commercial plaza designed to improve station accessibility and provide better public amenities.

Modern Facilities to Improve Passenger Experience

The proposed passenger plaza is expected to feature several new facilities, including:

• A digital business lounge
• Food kiosks
• Premium catering outlets
• Better pedestrian walkways
• Landscaped public spaces
• A proposed Rail-on-Wheels restaurant

The final design and layout of the plaza will be announced in the coming months.

Mumbai Central Set for a Modern Transformation

Built in 1930, Mumbai Central remains one of Western Railway's most iconic heritage stations, serving around 18 to 20 pairs of long-distance trains every day connecting Mumbai with Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, and several other northern and western states.

Railway officials said additional details, including hotel room tariffs, project timelines, and other passenger facilities, will be released as the redevelopment work progresses. The project aims to preserve the station's historic identity while introducing modern infrastructure that meets the growing needs of today's travelers.
