Mumbai Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Proposed

Wed Jul 01 2026

Western Railway Eyes Mumbai - Delhi, Bengaluru and Other Long-Distance Corridors as Success of First Vande Bharat Sleeper Service Drives Expansion

Western Railway has proposed introducing Vande Bharat Sleeper train services on three to four long-distance routes from Mumbai, with the Mumbai - New Delhi corridor emerging as the top priority. The proposal has been submitted to the Railway Board as part of advance operational planning, allowing services to begin quickly once new sleeper trainsets are allocated.

The move comes as India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper train, operating between Guwahati and Howrah, continues to report strong passenger demand, high occupancy, and impressive revenue. Railway officials believe the positive response highlights the growing popularity of premium overnight rail travel and supports the expansion of the sleeper network across major cities.

Mumbai - New Delhi Identified as the Highest-Priority Route

According to Western Railway officials, the Mumbai - New Delhi route has received the strongest demand among the proposed Vande Bharat Sleeper corridors. Along with the national capital route, two to three additional long-distance destinations have also been recommended to the Railway Board for future operations.

Officials explained that route identification, scheduling, and operational planning are already underway. This advance preparation is expected to reduce delays and allow the services to begin soon after the new Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets are delivered.

The Railway Board is expected to review the proposals before making final decisions on route approvals and train allocations.

Mumbai - Bengaluru Also Under Consideration

Railway sources have also indicated that a Mumbai - Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper service is being planned as part of the next phase of expansion. While the service has not yet received final approval, officials said it is among the key routes being considered once additional sleeper rakes become available.

The Mumbai - Bengaluru corridor is one of India's busiest long-distance travel routes, serving thousands of passengers every day. A premium overnight sleeper train on this route could offer faster travel, improved comfort, and a modern onboard experience for business and leisure travelers alike.

First Vande Bharat Sleeper Service Delivers Strong Performance

The proposed expansion follows the successful operation of India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Guwahati and Howrah.

According to data shared by Northeast Frontier Railway for the period between January 22 and June 23, 2026, the Guwahati - Howrah train carried 132,845 passengers, achieving an occupancy rate of 103.19% while generating ₹26.37 crore in revenue.

The return service from Howrah to Guwahati performed even better. It transported 136,595 passengers, recorded an occupancy of 126.69%, and generated ₹26.11 crore during the same period.

Combined, the two services carried 269,440 passengers, achieved an overall occupancy of 113.91%, and earned ₹52.48 crore within just five months. Railway officials say these figures clearly demonstrate the increasing demand for premium overnight train travel across India.

Growing Demand Supports Expansion of Premium Rail Travel

The success of the first Vande Bharat Sleeper service has strengthened confidence within Indian Railways that premium overnight trains can attract strong passenger demand on major intercity routes.

Unlike conventional overnight trains, Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are designed to provide faster journeys, improved passenger comfort, modern interiors, enhanced safety features, and upgraded onboard facilities. The trains are expected to become a preferred option for travelers seeking a better long-distance rail experience without choosing air travel.

The high occupancy levels also indicate that passengers are willing to pay for faster and more comfortable overnight journeys, especially on busy routes connecting India's largest metropolitan cities.

Mumbai Could Become a Major Hub for Vande Bharat Sleeper Services

If the Railway Board approves Western Railway's proposal, Mumbai is expected to become one of the country's leading hubs for the expanding Vande Bharat Sleeper network.

The proposed Mumbai - New Delhi service would connect two of India's most important cities with a next-generation overnight train, while future routes such as Mumbai - Bengaluru could further strengthen long-distance rail connectivity.

As Indian Railways continues expanding its fleet of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, the focus remains on improving travel quality, reducing journey times, and meeting rising passenger demand for premium overnight rail services across the country.
