BMC and FSAI Join Hands to Build Skilled Fire Safety Workforce and Improve Urban Disaster Readiness
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has partnered with the Fire & Security Association of India (FSAI) to launch a state-of-the-art MCMCR-FSAI Skill Development Centre in Powai. The new facility is designed to improve fire safety awareness, strengthen emergency response skills, and provide practical training through a live learning laboratory.
The initiative comes as Indian cities continue to focus on improving fire prevention systems following several high-profile fire incidents across residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of professional training, updated safety standards, and public awareness to reduce fire-related risks.
New Powai Centre Will Serve as a Fire Safety Centre of Excellence
Located at the Municipal Capacity Building and Research Centre (MCMCR) campus in Powai, the new training facility has been developed as a specialized center for fire safety education and technical skill development.
The center will support a wide range of participants, including:
- Fire service personnel
- Urban local body officials
- Architects and civil engineers
- Students pursuing technical education
- Housing societies
- Commercial establishments
- Industrial organizations
- General citizens interested in fire safety
Officials believe the facility will help improve fire safety practices across Maharashtra while encouraging better compliance with modern building safety requirements.
Live Training Laboratory Offers Real-World Fire Safety Experience
One of the biggest highlights of the new center is its Live Experiential Learning Laboratory, where trainees can understand and operate modern fire protection systems in a real-world environment.
The laboratory includes demonstrations of:
- Fire detection and alarm systems
- Automatic fire suppression technologies
- Passive fire protection solutions
- Emergency evacuation systems
- Fire pumps and hydrant networks
- Smoke detection sensors
- Modern firefighting equipment
- Life safety technologies used in commercial and residential buildings
Instead of only classroom-based learning, participants will receive practical, hands-on experience to better understand how fire safety systems function during emergencies.
Training Programs to Build a Skilled Fire Safety Workforce
The center will conduct practical workshops, certification courses, live demonstrations, and technical training programs aimed at improving professional capabilities.
Officials said the facility has been developed in accordance with the latest fire safety guidelines, including the National Building Code (NBC) 2026 and the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006.
The courses have been designed to help participants:
- Improve emergency response skills
- Understand fire prevention systems
- Learn safe building evacuation procedures
- Operate modern firefighting equipment
- Meet current fire safety compliance requirements
The initiative is also expected to support continuous learning for professionals already working in fire safety and disaster management.
Research and Innovation Will Be a Key Focus
Beyond training, the center will encourage research and innovation in fire protection technologies.
Industry experts, government agencies, educational institutions, and fire safety professionals will be able to collaborate on new safety solutions, exchange technical knowledge, and develop improved emergency management practices.
The facility is expected to become a platform for testing modern fire safety technologies while supporting innovation that can be adopted across urban infrastructure projects.
Supporting Safer Cities Across Maharashtra
According to BMC officials, strengthening fire safety requires both advanced infrastructure and well-trained professionals.
By combining practical education with modern technology, the new skill development centre aims to help urban local bodies improve preparedness for emergencies while supporting safer residential and commercial environments.
Growing urbanization, high-rise developments, and increasing infrastructure projects have made fire safety training more important than ever. Similar capacity-building initiatives have been recommended in recent fire safety assessments and urban disaster management reports to improve response times and reduce risks during emergencies.
Officials Highlight Long-Term Benefits
Speaking during the launch, Dr. Vipin Sharma, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs), said the new center represents an important step toward strengthening Mumbai's fire safety ecosystem.
He noted that the facility will enhance technical expertise, improve emergency preparedness, promote skill-based learning, and contribute to building safer and more resilient urban communities.
Officials added that by providing practical education and industry-focused training, the center is expected to create a highly skilled workforce capable of supporting future fire prevention and emergency response efforts across Maharashtra.
