Mumbai Metro Line 5 Expanded To 34.21 Km As Phase 1 Nears Final Inspection; Major Connectivity Boost Planned For Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan & Ulhasnagar

Thu May 28 2026

Mumbai Metro Line 5 has received a major boost with the approval of the 11.83-km Metro Line 5A extension, increasing the corridor’s total length to 34.21 km. The ₹18,130-crore project will connect Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar and Dombivli while improving access to key residential, industrial and commercial hubs. Meanwhile, Phase 1 is nearing CMRS inspection, bringing the corridor closer to operational launch and promising significant reductions in travel time across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Mumbai Metro Line 5 has received a major expansion push with the approval of the new Metro Line 5A extension, taking the total corridor length from 22.38 kilometres to 34.21 kilometres and significantly strengthening connectivity across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, Dombivli and surrounding growth centres in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

At the same time, Phase 1 of the project has entered its final stages and is now moving towards inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), marking a major milestone before operations begin.

Metro Line 5 Set To Become One Of MMR’s Largest Metro Corridors

The expanded Metro Line 5 corridor is now being developed at an estimated total cost of ₹18,130 crore, making it one of the biggest metro infrastructure projects in the MMR region.

The project is expected to become a game-changing transport corridor for eastern Mumbai and adjoining regions by connecting major residential zones, industrial clusters, warehousing hubs and suburban railway networks.

Authorities stated that the commissioning of Phase 1 by the end of this year will mark the beginning of a major urban mobility transformation for lakhs of daily commuters.

CM Devendra Fadnavis Calls Metro 5 A Major Economic Connector

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described Metro Line 5 as a critical infrastructure intervention for the rapidly growing Bhiwandi and Kalyan-Dombivli belt.

He stated that Bhiwandi, known as one of Asia’s largest textile and warehousing hubs, along with the densely populated Kalyan-Dombivli region, requires high-capacity and efficient public transport infrastructure to unlock its economic potential.

According to the Chief Minister, the expanded metro corridor will improve integration between highways, suburban railways and commercial centres while offering faster and safer travel for lakhs of citizens.

MMRDA Says Phase 1 Nearing CMRS Inspection

MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee stated that Metro Line 5 Phase 1 has reached an advanced stage of execution and preparations for CMRS inspection are now underway.

He added that station infrastructure across the corridor is steadily taking shape and the project will play an important role in achieving the broader “Mumbai in Minutes” vision by drastically reducing travel time across the region.

The CMRS inspection is considered one of the final regulatory clearances before passenger operations begin.

Travel Time Expected To Reduce By 40–50 Per Cent

Officials stated that the corridor is expected to reduce travel time by nearly 40 to 50 per cent compared to existing road-based travel across the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan belt.

The project is also expected to ease congestion on several major roads and highways while strengthening connectivity to industrial areas, logistics hubs, textile markets and commercial zones.

The metro line is being seen as a crucial mobility upgrade for one of the fastest-growing urban belts in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Corridor To Connect Key Residential And Industrial Hubs

The expanded Metro Line 5 corridor will serve major residential, commercial and industrial centres including Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar and Dombivli.

The project has also been designed with strong intermodal connectivity, including integration with Metro Line 4 at Balkhum and Metro Line 12 at Kalyan Junction.

Passengers will additionally receive direct access to important suburban railway stations including Thane, Kalyan, Vitthalwadi and Ulhasnagar.

Authorities stated that feeder bus systems and highway integration will further improve last-mile connectivity for commuters.

Three Major Phases Planned Under Expanded Corridor

The project is being developed in multiple phases.

Phase 1 stretches from Thane to Dhamankar Naka and covers 11.9 kilometres with six stations including Balkhum, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjurphata and Dhamankar Naka.

Phase 2 will extend the line from Dhamankar Naka to Durgadi through a combination of elevated and underground sections.

The newly approved Metro Line 5A extension will further connect Durgadi, Khadakpada, Bhoirwadi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar through an additional 11.83-kilometre elevated stretch.

A dedicated spur line towards Ulhasnagar has also been included in the project design.

Major Push Towards Sustainable Urban Mobility

Officials believe Metro Line 5 will become one of the most important public transport corridors in eastern MMR by improving regional connectivity, supporting economic growth and encouraging sustainable mobility.

With Phase 1 nearing operational readiness and the corridor expanding further, Metro Line 5 is expected to play a major role in reshaping transport infrastructure across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar over the coming years.
