Mumbai MHADA Redevelopment Advances in 3 Key Areas

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is moving ahead with several important redevelopment projects across Mumbai, with a strong focus on improving housing conditions and creating better rehabilitation opportunities for residents.

Three projects that have seen notable progress in 2026 are the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar Cluster Redevelopment in Goregaon, GTB Nagar Group Redevelopment in Sion Koliwada and the redevelopment of four unsafe transit buildings at Sion Pratiksha Nagar.

Under the leadership of MHADA Vice President and CEO Sanjeev Jaiswal IAS, these projects reflect the authority's continued focus on redevelopment, resident safety and better housing infrastructure.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar Redevelopment Gets Close Attention

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar Cluster Redevelopment Project in Goregaon is one of the major redevelopment initiatives being monitored by MHADA.

In May 2026, Sanjeev Jaiswal inspected the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar Cluster Redevelopment Project along with the Siddharth Nagar-Goregaon housing project. The visit focused on reviewing the progress of the projects and understanding the development work on the ground.

Regular project inspections are important for large redevelopment plans because they help MHADA review progress, identify areas that need attention and maintain focus on timely implementation.

The project is part of MHADA's broader effort to improve older residential areas and support the development of more organized housing in Mumbai.

GTB Nagar Redevelopment Moves Forward

The GTB Nagar Group Redevelopment Project in Sion Koliwada has also reached important milestones in 2026.

MHADA reported in March that the project had gained momentum, with the tripartite development agreement completed and a Construction-cum-Development Agreement signed between MHADA and the concerned parties.

A further step came in May when the draft master layout for the GTB Nagar Cluster Redevelopment Project was presented before Sanjeev Jaiswal. The presentation provided an opportunity to review the proposed redevelopment planning and layout.

The progress at GTB Nagar shows how redevelopment projects can move through several stages, from agreements and planning to detailed layouts and future implementation. For residents, these steps are important because they help create a clearer path toward the redevelopment of an established residential area.

MHADA's work on the project also reflects its effort to bring structure and planning into large-scale redevelopment while keeping the needs of existing residents in focus.

Sion Pratiksha Nagar Buildings Set for Safe Redevelopment

One of the most resident-focused redevelopment decisions came in February 2026 at Sion Pratiksha Nagar.

MHADA approved the redevelopment of four unsafe transit buildings, identified as Buildings 36, 37, 53 and 54. The decision followed structural concerns and an assessment conducted through IIT Bombay. The assessment recommended redevelopment of the four buildings.

The redevelopment plan will benefit 261 families and four shop owners. MHADA plans to construct two new buildings with stilt plus 22 floors, providing a total of 322 transit tenements for eligible residents under the authority's rehabilitation policy.

The decision also provides temporary support for affected residents while the new buildings are being constructed. MHADA approved temporary alternative accommodation with rent support according to its policy.

The project is expected to require at least two years for completion. This approach allows the redevelopment to address the condition of the existing buildings while also providing residents with a planned rehabilitation arrangement.

MHADA Keeps Resident Welfare at the Center

The latest progress across Goregaon, GTB Nagar and Sion Pratiksha Nagar highlights three different aspects of Mumbai's redevelopment needs.

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar project is moving ahead through project-level monitoring, GTB Nagar has progressed through agreements and master planning, while Sion Pratiksha Nagar has received a redevelopment decision focused strongly on resident safety and rehabilitation.

With Sanjeev Jaiswal leading MHADA, the authority has continued to place attention on project monitoring, redevelopment planning and practical housing solutions. These initiatives are part of the wider effort to improve Mumbai's aging residential infrastructure and create safer and more modern housing options.
