Mumbai News: Gorai Beach Finally Illuminated With 94 Lights, Ending Years Of Darkness & Boosting Safety

Thu Apr 09 2026

Mumbai: In a major relief for residents and visitors, Gorai Beach in north Mumbai has finally been illuminated, bringing an end to years of darkness that had raised serious safety concerns.

The long-pending demand has now been addressed with the installation of 94 lights, significantly improving visibility, accessibility, and overall safety along the shoreline.

A Long-Standing Demand Finally Fulfilled

For years, poor lighting at Gorai Beach had been a major concern for locals. The issue gained attention during recent elections, with residents repeatedly highlighting the risks posed by darkness, especially after sunset.

For many, the beach is not just a recreational spot but an essential access route. Several homes in the area can only be reached through the beach due to geographical constraints.

Residents Highlight Safety Risks

Locals had long warned about the dangers of navigating the beach at night. Uneven sand, hidden pits, and high tides made movement risky, particularly during the monsoon season.

Limited visibility also made it difficult for residents to commute safely, whether on foot or by two-wheelers. The lack of lighting had turned daily movement into a challenge.

Tourism Impacted By Poor Infrastructure

Gorai Beach is a popular destination for tourists, but the absence of proper lighting had severely affected its appeal after evening hours.

Visitors often avoided the beach post-sunset due to safety concerns, impacting local tourism and small businesses dependent on footfall.

Project Completed Despite CRZ Challenges

The installation of lighting infrastructure faced multiple delays due to Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) restrictions, which limit construction activities in coastal areas.

Despite these challenges, the project was successfully executed with support from:

  • Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation
  • Adani Electricity

Officials highlighted technical difficulties such as rocky terrain and the need to protect poles from corrosion caused by the salty coastal environment.

Local Leaders and Community Efforts

The project was facilitated with the involvement of local representatives, including Sanjay Upadhyay, along with civic authorities.

Residents have welcomed the move, calling it a significant step toward improving safety and quality of life in the area.

What Still Needs Attention

While the lighting project has addressed a major concern, issues such as lifeguard shortages remain.

Experts believe that for a complete safety ecosystem, additional measures like:

  • Adequate lifeguard deployment
  • Emergency response systems
  • Better monitoring

are equally important.

A Step Towards Safer Public Spaces

The illumination of Gorai Beach marks a crucial upgrade in Mumbai’s coastal infrastructure, enhancing both safety and accessibility.

As the city continues to improve public spaces, such initiatives play a key role in balancing tourism, local needs, and urban development.
