Mumbai Self-Redevelopment Drive: Housing Societies Get Push

A new citywide campaign to encourage housing societies to take up self-redevelopment is expected to give Mumbai’s middle-class residents a stronger path toward better homes and improved living conditions.

Mumbai To Get Major Self-Redevelopment Campaign

BJP MLA and Mumbai District Central Cooperative Bank Chairman Pravin Darekar has announced plans to launch a major campaign promoting self-redevelopment among housing societies across Mumbai.

Darekar made the announcement at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of Anant Tapasya Cooperative Housing Society in Borivali West. He said self-redevelopment is gaining momentum in Mumbai, with efforts focused on helping more societies manage redevelopment on their own.

1,600 Societies Have Submitted Proposals

According to Darekar, around 1,600 proposals have been received by the Mumbai District Central Cooperative Bank for self-redevelopment. Loans have already been sanctioned to 46 housing societies, while around 21 to 22 buildings have been completed.

He said the completed projects have helped middle-class families move into larger and improved homes.

Bank Support Aims To Make Redevelopment Easier

Darekar said housing and cooperation have been important areas of his work. After taking charge as chairman of the Mumbai District Central Cooperative Bank, he introduced a loan policy to support housing societies interested in self-redevelopment.

He also discussed the importance of the initiative with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Darekar said the state government subsequently took 18 decisions aimed at supporting self-redevelopment projects.

Delhi Officials Study Mumbai’s Redevelopment Model

The MLA said a delegation of IAS officers from Delhi recently visited Mumbai to understand how the self-redevelopment system works.

The delegation studied areas such as construction, financing and loan repayment. Darekar said the visit could help Maharashtra’s model reach other parts of the country and encourage more housing societies to consider self-redevelopment.

New Housing Initiatives Planned For Mumbai

Darekar also highlighted upcoming development initiatives by the Mumbai District Central Cooperative Bank. A housing federation sub-center is planned at Aarey to serve residents in Mumbai’s suburbs.

In addition, a 12-story Sahakar Bhavan with modern facilities is being built at Sion. The project is expected to strengthen facilities and support for the cooperative sector.

Namo Sahakar Taxi Scheme Also Announced

Darekar further announced the upcoming Namo Sahakar Taxi scheme, which is intended to provide direct benefits to taxi drivers.

With the proposed citywide campaign and growing financial support, self-redevelopment could offer more Mumbai housing societies an opportunity to rebuild aging properties while giving residents larger and better homes.
