New Water Infrastructure Project Aims to Meet Mumbai’s Rising Water Demand

Mumbai: In a major step towards strengthening Mumbai’s water supply system, BMC Commissioner and Administrator Ashwini Bhide visited the under-construction 2,000 million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant at the Bhandup Complex and reviewed the progress of the ongoing work. During the inspection, she instructed officials to complete the project within the planned timeline and speed up construction activities wherever needed.

Bhandup Complex to Get Major Capacity Expansion

The Bhandup Complex is one of Mumbai’s most important water infrastructure centres and currently houses Asia’s largest water treatment facility. At present, the complex operates two treatment plants with a total treatment capacity of around 2,810 MLD, supplying treated water to millions of residents across the city.

To address Mumbai’s growing water needs due to rapid urbanisation and increasing population, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started work on an additional 2,000 MLD treatment plant at the same location.

Commissioner Calls for Faster Work and Better Execution

During her site visit, Ashwini Bhide examined different stages of the project and reviewed construction activities in detail. She directed officials to increase manpower and deploy additional machinery to ensure timely completion.

She also highlighted the importance of proper planning for large-scale excavation work and instructed authorities to establish an efficient system for debris transportation and disposal to avoid delays and maintain smooth project execution.

Project Expected to Strengthen Mumbai’s Future Water Supply

Once operational, the new treatment plant is expected to significantly increase the city’s water treatment capacity and improve the reliability of water distribution across Mumbai. The project is aimed at supporting the city’s future requirements and ensuring a more efficient and sustainable water supply network.

Senior officials present during the inspection included Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar, Deputy Commissioner Prashant Gaikwad, Deputy Commissioner (Special Engineering) Purushottam Malvade, Chief Engineer (Water Supply Projects) Chandrakant Chaudhary and other concerned officers.
