Mumbai’s SCLR Phase 2 Nears Completion As MMRDA Reviews Final Works On BKC-Vakola Connector
Thu May 28 2026
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced that nearly 98% of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) Phase 2 project is complete. Senior officials, led by Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, recently reviewed progress and directed agencies to expedite the remaining work. Once operational, the BKC-Vakola connector is expected to improve connectivity between eastern and western Mumbai, reduce travel time by up to 35 minutes and ease congestion on major roads.
Mumbai’s long-awaited Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) Phase 2 project has moved closer to completion, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) announcing that nearly 98 per cent of the physical work has already been completed on the crucial BKC-Vakola connector corridor.
Senior MMRDA officials on Friday conducted a detailed inspection of the ongoing works and directed contractors and agencies to speed up the remaining execution while ensuring construction quality and safety standards are maintained.
MMRDA Officials Conduct Ground Inspection Of Key Connector
The inspection was led by MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee along with Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Vikram Kumar.
During the site visit, officials reviewed the progress of civil works, connectivity structures and finishing activities currently underway under the final phase of the project.
Contractors and project agencies were instructed to accelerate pending works so the corridor can become operational at the earliest.
The review is being seen as an important step as Mumbai prepares for the completion of one of its key east-west connectivity infrastructure projects.
SCLR Phase 2 Reaches Final Stage
According to MMRDA officials, around 98 per cent of the physical construction work under SCLR Phase 2 has already been completed.
The BKC-Vakola connector forms a major part of the final phase of the larger Santacruz-Chembur Link Road project, which has been developed in stages over several years to improve movement across Mumbai’s congested transport corridors.
Officials stated that only finishing and integration works remain before the project moves towards full operational readiness.
Corridor To Improve Connectivity Across Mumbai
Once opened, the upgraded SCLR Phase 2 corridor is expected to significantly strengthen connectivity between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs.
The corridor will directly connect the Eastern Express Highway, Western Express Highway, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Santacruz, Kurla, Kalina and Chembur through multiple flyovers, connectors and elevated sections.
Authorities believe the project will become one of Mumbai’s most important urban mobility links by reducing dependency on heavily congested internal roads.
Travel Time Expected To Reduce By 35 Minutes
MMRDA officials stated that the completion of the corridor is expected to reduce travel time by nearly 35 minutes for thousands of daily commuters travelling between eastern and western Mumbai.
The project is also expected to ease pressure on several key arterial roads and junctions currently facing heavy traffic congestion during peak hours.
Improved traffic distribution through the SCLR network is likely to enhance movement towards BKC, Mumbai’s major business district, while also improving airport and highway connectivity.
Major Boost For Mumbai’s Urban Infrastructure Network
Officials said the completion of SCLR Phase 2 will finally transform the corridor into a fully integrated urban mobility network instead of a partially connected route.
The project is part of Mumbai’s broader infrastructure expansion strategy focused on reducing congestion, improving east-west movement and strengthening multimodal connectivity across the city.
With the final construction activities now nearing completion, commuters are expected to soon witness a major improvement in travel efficiency across one of Mumbai’s busiest transport corridors.
