Air India Express Launches Direct UAE Service as Navi Mumbai International Airport Begins International Passenger and Cargo Operations
Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has officially entered the global aviation network after welcoming its first scheduled international flight from Abu Dhabi. The milestone marks the beginning of international passenger and cargo operations at Maharashtra's newest airport, creating a major boost for travel, trade, and connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The inaugural international service was operated by Air India Express, with flight IX-208 arriving from Abu Dhabi on Wednesday morning. The historic landing signals a new chapter for NMIA, which has been developed to ease pressure on Mumbai's existing airport while supporting the region's growing demand for international air travel.
First International Flight Marks Major Milestone for Navi Mumbai Airport
The Air India Express flight departed Abu Dhabi at 5:45 a.m. local time and landed at Navi Mumbai International Airport at approximately 10:20 a.m. This is the airport's first scheduled international passenger flight and another significant achievement following the launch of its domestic operations earlier this year.
The airport's entry into international aviation is expected to strengthen Maharashtra's position as one of India's leading transportation and logistics hubs while improving travel options for passengers heading to the Middle East.
Air India Express Begins Abu Dhabi Route With More Flights Planned
Air India Express has started the Navi Mumbai-Abu Dhabi route with two weekly flights, operating every Wednesday and Friday.
To meet expected passenger demand, the airline plans to increase the service to three flights per week from July 29, adding a Sunday schedule.
The return flight, IX-207, will depart Navi Mumbai at 2:55 p.m. and reach Abu Dhabi at 4:35 p.m. local time, with an estimated journey time of about 3 hours and 10 minutes.
The direct connection is expected to benefit business travelers, tourists, students, and the large Indian community living in the United Arab Emirates.
Lower Introductory Airfares Offer More Affordable Travel
Passengers booking the new route can take advantage of an introductory fare starting at ₹12,671.
The launch fare is lower than the average ticket price for the same route from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, making the new service an attractive option for travelers looking for competitive pricing and another departure point within the Mumbai region.
Industry experts believe increased competition between airports and airlines could help keep international fares more affordable over time.
International Cargo Operations Begin With First Export Shipment
Along with passenger services, Navi Mumbai International Airport has also launched its international cargo operations.
The inaugural flight carried the airport's first international shipment of perishable goods, officially starting global export services. The new cargo facility is expected to improve cold-chain logistics and provide Indian farmers, food exporters, and agricultural businesses with faster access to markets across the Gulf region.
Better cargo connectivity is likely to support exports of fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood, flowers, and other time-sensitive products that require quick transportation.
A Second International Gateway for the Mumbai Region
The start of international operations is another important step in NMIA's long-term development. The airport has been designed to reduce congestion at Mumbai's existing international airport while supporting the rapid growth of passenger traffic and air cargo in western India.
Once fully operational, Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to handle millions of passengers annually, improve regional connectivity, and attract new international airlines and global investment. Aviation experts also see the airport becoming an important logistics and commercial hub that supports India's expanding trade with the Middle East and other international markets.
With its first scheduled international flight successfully completed, Navi Mumbai International Airport has officially begun its journey as one of India's newest global aviation gateways, opening new opportunities for travelers, businesses, and exporters across Maharashtra.
