Digital Payments and Better Tax Compliance Help NMMC Achieve Highest-Ever First-Quarter Revenue
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has achieved a major financial milestone by collecting a record ₹434.02 crore in property tax during the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year. The civic body said this is the highest property tax collection ever recorded between April 1 and June 30, reflecting stronger taxpayer participation and improved digital services.
According to NMMC officials, the impressive collection was driven by higher public compliance, increased use of online payment methods, targeted awareness campaigns, and the successful recovery of pending property tax dues. Similar to other Indian municipal corporations that are expanding digital governance, NMMC has focused on making tax payments easier and more accessible for residents.
More Than 1.43 Lakh Property Owners Paid Taxes
During the first three months of the financial year, 1,43,329 property owners paid their property taxes, marking a significant increase compared to the same period last year. In the first quarter of 2025-26, the civic body had collected ₹372.42 crore from 98,478 taxpayers.
Officials said the higher number of taxpayers highlights growing public confidence in the corporation's digital payment system and improved tax administration.
The corporation also recovered ₹23.67 crore from 15,250 property owners who had outstanding tax dues from previous years. Additionally, 56,973 taxpayers, who had delayed payments until later quarters in the previous financial year, cleared their taxes within the first quarter this year, contributing more than ₹165.74 crore.
Online Payments Contribute More Than 72% of Total Collection
Digital payment methods continued to dominate property tax collections in Navi Mumbai.
NMMC reported that ₹280.71 crore, or nearly 72.2% of the total revenue, was collected through online payment options such as UPI, QR codes, net banking, debit cards, and credit cards. Another ₹144.93 crore came through bank transactions, while only ₹8.36 crore was received through offline payment modes.
Officials credited the strong digital performance to citizen-friendly initiatives, including personalized payment links sent through SMS and WhatsApp along with regular awareness campaigns on social media.
Nearly 57,397 taxpayers used these personalized payment links, generating close to ₹58 crore in revenue. This represented over 40% of all taxpayers who made property tax payments during the quarter.
Ghansoli Leads Property Tax Collection Across Navi Mumbai
Among all administrative divisions, Ghansoli recorded the highest property tax collection, contributing approximately ₹80 crore during the first quarter.
Industrial properties remained the largest source of property tax revenue, accounting for 35.79% of total collections. Residential properties contributed 31.92%, followed by commercial properties at 22.26%. Mixed-use and other categories together made up the remaining 10.03%.
The figures highlight the important role of Navi Mumbai's industrial and commercial sectors in supporting the city's municipal revenue.
Mayor Thanks Citizens for Record-Breaking Response
Mayor Sujata Patil thanked residents for their timely tax payments and said the record-breaking collection reflects the growing trust citizens have in the municipal administration.
She said the achievement demonstrates the increasing acceptance of digital public services and the shared commitment of Navi Mumbai residents toward supporting the city's growth and development.
Commissioner Highlights Technology-Driven Governance
Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde described property tax as one of the most important sources of funding for civic infrastructure and public services.
He said the historic achievement was made possible through the combined efforts of citizens and the municipal administration. According to him, technology-based planning, data-driven revenue management, and transparent digital services have significantly improved tax collection efficiency.
The commissioner added that NMMC will continue strengthening citizen-focused digital governance while ensuring transparent and efficient municipal services in the years ahead.
