Navi Mumbai Launches Special Drives to Improve Cleanliness and Encourage Responsible Waste Disposal

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched an intensive citywide cleanliness campaign as part of the Swachh Survekshan 2025–26 initiative. Along with large-scale cleaning operations, the civic body is also running awareness programs to encourage residents to adopt better waste management habits and maintain cleaner neighborhoods.

The special campaign is being carried out from June 15 to June 30 across multiple locations in Navi Mumbai, focusing especially on areas that experience heavy public movement or require immediate sanitation improvements.

Focus Areas Include Railway Stations, Highways, Slums and Public Spaces

As part of the initiative, NMMC has identified several key areas for focused cleaning activities. These include railway stations, stretches along the Sion–Panvel Highway, slum settlements, villages and gaothans, lakesides, creek areas, public toilets and inner roads.

The objective is to improve sanitation standards while creating long-term public awareness about maintaining clean surroundings.

NMMC Promotes Four-Way Waste Segregation Across the City

A major highlight of the campaign is encouraging residents to separate household waste at the source into four categories:

  • Wet waste
  • Dry waste
  • Domestic hazardous waste
  • Sanitary waste

This initiative supports the implementation of Solid Waste Management Rules and aims to improve scientific waste handling across Navi Mumbai.

Housing societies, institutions and large establishments are being encouraged to process and manage their waste within their own premises using sustainable and environmentally responsible methods.

Awareness Campaign Reaches Residents Through Door-to-Door Outreach

To increase public participation, NMMC has partnered with NGOs AG Enviro and Parisar Sakhi to conduct awareness activities across all eight ward office areas.

Dedicated teams are visiting residential societies, commercial establishments and individual households to educate people about proper waste segregation practices. Citizens are also being encouraged to hand over segregated waste separately to municipal collection vehicles.

Special attention is being given to bulk waste generators, with guidance provided on establishing and maintaining on-site waste processing systems.

Public Toilets Receive Deep Cleaning and Hygiene Upgrades

As part of the cleanliness drive, NMMC carried out intensive sanitation work at several public and community toilet facilities across locations including Sanpada Sector 5, CBD Belapur Sector 2, Agroli and Koparkhairane.

The cleaning operations included thorough sanitation of toilet areas and nearby surroundings, along with public outreach efforts to spread awareness about hygiene and proper maintenance.

Waste Processing Facilities Reviewed in Key Zones

Officials also conducted inspections and awareness sessions at multiple bulk waste generator sites under Zone 2.

Locations covered included Gavate Wadi, Mindspace and Chinchpada in Airoli, along with Green World Society in Digha.

During these visits, representatives and facility operators received guidance on maintaining composting units and improving the efficiency of waste processing systems to support long-term environmental goals.

NMMC Leadership Highlights Sustainable Waste Management Goals

Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde said that the special cleanliness drives and public awareness activities are being carried out in a planned and systematic manner across all ward areas.

According to the civic administration, the campaign is designed to strengthen city cleanliness standards while promoting sustainable waste management practices and increasing citizen participation.

The initiative is being implemented under the guidance of Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, with support from Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar and coordination by Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Dr. Ajay Gadde.

As Navi Mumbai continues its Swachh Survekshan 2025–26 journey, the campaign reflects the city’s broader effort to build cleaner communities and create long-term environmental awareness.
